history

The NMS Bern was as free Protestant girls' school ( N ew M ädchen s chule) founded in 1851st Lessons for 63 students took place in rented rooms at Marktgasse 80. It was only 136 years later that boys were accepted into school. Two years after it was founded, the NMS teachers' seminar opened its doors: by the beginning of the 20th century, 40% of the teachers in the canton of Bern were trained here. After the construction of the school building on Waisenhausplatz, which is still used today as the main building, the school - the first in the city of Bern - to set up a Froebel kindergarten in 1877. Twenty years later, the school trained both teachers and kindergarten teachers. It was only over a hundred years after the school was founded, in 1974, that the canton of Bern began to co-finance the school with regular contributions of 30 to 40%. Over the course of the next three decades, the Diplommittelschule (now Fachmittelschule), the grammar school and the Bernese seminar for adult education (which later became independent from the school) were founded at the school, while the converted Aarhof on the banks of the Aare was a new location for the Elementary school could be found. Since summer 2019, the NMS Bern has also been running the Guttannen primary school as an external location.

In 2001 the tertiary institute for the training and further education of teachers opened at the NMS, which was affiliated with the University of Bern and would replace the teacher and kindergarten teacher seminar. Only four years later, however, teacher training in the canton of Bern was entrusted to the University of Education Bern , so that the Institute for Pre-School and Primary School (IVP NMS) today forms a department of the NMS on the one hand, but is also affiliated with the PH Bern.

Departments

Elementary school

The elementary school is based on the curriculum of the Canton of Bern. It consists of primary (1st – 6th grades, including Progymnasium from 5th grade) and secondary level 1 (upper level: 7th – 10th grades). From the 7th grade onwards, there are 3 levels: 4-year secondary school, 3-year secondary school, lower grammar school. Teaching at the upper level is based on the innovative “learning world” model (awarded by the OECD). The primary school offers day care. In addition to regular lessons, the children spend lunchtime with the class teacher. After school is over, homework and childcare are offered. At the primary school, talent promotion and first steps in independent learning are built in. Foreign language lessons start in 1st grade (English). French follows from the 3rd grade. The content is first conveyed in a playful way, then in a more structured way. Regular consultations are held with every child in all classes of the elementary school, which leads to a trusting relationship between the learner and the teacher. At the upper level, lessons are organized according to the “learning world” model. In German, French, mathematics, English and "Natur-Mensch-Gesellschaft NMG", the teachers impart inputs in 20-minute units, which the learners use to continue working independently in the studio. This work will be evaluated in a following input. At the same time, interactive units take place where active participation and action are the focus. All other subjects are taught in regular lessons. English is taught in level groups at the upper level. At the end of the 9th grade the European language diplomas A2 / B1 / B2 are aimed for. French can also be completed with a language diploma (A2 / B1). In the 9th grade, there is a compulsory language stay in a language area of your choice. At the end of the 4-year secondary school (10th grade), the secondary level qualification of the canton of Bern can be obtained with a comparative test. The 3-year secondary school prepares students for both vocational training and secondary schools, and the lower secondary school is the first part of the 6-year high school education.

Technical middle school

The aim of the secondary school of the NMS Bern is to support the learners in their independence and ability to study. For this purpose, it is the only specialized secondary school in the canton of Bern to work with the Weissenstein PLUS model from the second school year and includes performance outside of the regular examinations and tests (called "teaching skills") in the grading. Also from the second year of technical secondary school, instruction is given in occupational areas (social work and health). With the double degree, after successfully completing the technical secondary school, it is possible to acquire the specialist diploma in education in addition to the specialist diploma in social work or health. This specialist baccalaureate opens the way to teacher training, as it allows specialist baccalaureate students to transfer to the teacher training college (pre-school and primary level) without having to take an exam, while the other types of specialist baccalaureate offer access to universities of applied sciences. In addition to the foreign languages French and English, which are compulsory in all areas, students can attend courses from the second year onwards to acquire the FCE certificate (English) and the DELF certificate (French). In addition to regular consultations with the class teachers, there is also the option of learning coaching by a trained learning coach, psychological advice from the school psychologist and accompanied homework support (Learning PLUS) to support the learners . The NMS secondary school publishes an annual study guide with all the important information, which is also published on the NMS Bern website.

Weissenstein PLUS model

The Weissenstein PLUS teaching model emerged in 2019 from the Weissenstein model, which has been in use at the FMS of the NMS Bern since 2008 and was scientifically supported during the introduction by the PHBern. The aim of the Weissenstein model is to improve the learners' self-competence and to prepare them for tertiary learning at the university. For the extension to the Weissenstein PLUS model, new elements have been added to support the learning processes of the learners even better. The interplay of the elements has also resulted in an attractive rhythm that enlivens everyday school life. All learning situations encourage the use of different technical and interdisciplinary skills. The teaching model consists of the following parts:

Weissenstein model

The model is closely linked to the requirements for studying aptitude at the tertiary level (higher technical schools, universities of applied sciences or universities of teacher education). During the entire training period at the FMS, proof of performance is therefore provided in test weeks. Before each test week, there are several weeks of preparation as a learning phase without a learning objective check.

- The subject teaching (learning phases) and the learning objective controls are separate.

- The learners receive the learning objectives at the beginning of each learning phase.

- In every subject week, the learners are given time to work through and review the subject matter during the supervised "PLUS" lessons.

- The learning phases are concluded with a test week in which all learning objective controls take place.

Learning location PLUS

Around 130 workplaces are available for developing, deepening and consolidating learning content. The PLUS is available to learners all day long, also in the margins and in between hours, in the SL phases, the Learning PLUS and during the test weeks.

Accompany PLUS

Over the three years of FMS, there are regular discussions with the learners at the learning location PLUS, in which the strengths and weaknesses of their learning and self-management are discussed and opportunities for improvement are shown.

Subject tuition PLUS

So that the learners can make optimal use of the time during the lessons, the classic subject lesson is divided into two phases within the lesson time, which are repeated every day - actual subject lesson and time during which the pupils learn about their learning process in terms of content, time and from the Being able to shape the social form individually.

Learning PLUS

Doing homework on a regular basis causes difficulties for many learners and is therefore often neglected. For this reason, we offer learning PLUS at FMS: During three lunches per week, two teachers are available to learners for questions and advice on completing their homework,

reflection

The ability to reflect on one's own work is central to the development of efficient learning and is required for both studies and work. Our learners therefore regularly receive assignments to reflect on certain topics or in specific learning phases.

Teaching skills

We attach great importance to continuous cooperation and constant learning progress; Active participation in lessons and positive work and learning behavior are central to the learning process and are weighted accordingly. The teaching competence flows into the respective subject grade as a whole grade.

Self-learning phases (SL)

The self-learning phases represent milestones in the development of independence and personal responsibility during the training. There are no specialist or PLUS lessons during these weeks, but rather the learners work independently on assignments from defined subject groups. They can freely choose their place of work and study and also determine the order of the jobs themselves.

high school

The NMS high school leads to a cantonal and Swiss-recognized Matura in four years and thus opens up access to studies at universities, colleges of education, federal technical universities and - with certain conditions, e.g. B. Internships - also at universities of applied sciences.

The main subjects offered are artistic design, biology / chemistry, music, philosophy / pedagogy / psychology, economics / law and, as supplementary subjects, applications in mathematics, history, geography, psychology / pedagogy, religious studies and sport.

The focus is on the pupil: Individual support, support and appreciation are just as much a part of the grammar school as development and training-related performance requirements. Pupils can only develop according to their possibilities and utilize their potential if they feel comfortable in everyday school life and develop a positive self-image. The respectful dialogue between teachers and learners is an essential element of the school culture.

Knowledge and skills: what do universities and colleges expect from high school graduates? That they are capable of studying. That is why those responsible at the grammar school attach great importance to the careful development of specialist knowledge and the development of interdisciplinary skills - under the motto "Give space and time to learning". They are based on the classic categories of personal, social and methodological competence; Behind this are various fields of competence such as time planning, learning strategies, dealing with texts, conflict resolution, etc. These competencies are systematically built up over the four years and the students document them in a personal competence portfolio. This competency build-up takes place both in specialist lessons with corresponding teaching concepts and vessels, as well as in special weeks, internships and projects of independently organized learning (SOL).

Institute Pre-School and Primary Level (IVP NMS)

Institute Pre-School and Primary Level (Teacher Training) The University Institute Pre-School and Primary Level NMS (IVP NMS) offers a 3-year bachelor's degree for teachers of the pre-school level (kindergarten) and the primary level (1st to 6th school year). The course leads to a cantonal and Switzerland-wide recognized teaching diploma for the pre-school and primary level and a Bachelor of Arts in Pre-Primary and Primary Education. Application-oriented research and development projects and selected advanced training courses are also carried out at the institute. The course places value on extensive practical training and focuses on the subjects of music, design and sport. A study model for lateral entrants aged 30 and over has been carried out at the IVP NMS since 2013. The 30+ study model enables a combination of training and part-time employment at a school from the second year of study. The IVP NMS was founded in 2001 as a department of the NMS Bern and in 2005 affiliated to the German-speaking University of Education Bern (PHBern). The approximately 250 students of the IVP NMS are enrolled at the PHBern. The Education and Culture Directorate of the Canton of Bern is in direct control of the IVP NMS. Since 2001, the IVP NMS has awarded around 1,000 teaching diplomas and bachelors of arts.

financing

The NMS Bern is organized under association law. As a privately owned school, it covers 40% to 100% of its costs, depending on the department, through school fees (except for the IVP, which charges the same fees as the PH Bern) and voluntary allowances from parents, but also receives grants from the canton.
