history

The company was founded in 1858 by Friedrich Hermann and Hermann Studer as a mechanical workshop in Bern and initially manufactured mechanical precision instruments, including instruments for weather pillars . Her first international success was her contract for the delivery of weather measuring devices for the Central Physical Observatory in St. Petersburg (Russia) in 1867. After relocating, the company began developing and manufacturing instruments for ophthalmology in 1876.

After various changes of ownership, the company was renamed Haag-Streit in 1925 . The focus continued to be on devices for ophthalmology, which were further developed in collaboration with specialists from the Bern University Hospital , in particular with the then head Hans Goldmann .

In 1965, Haag-Streit founded its first subsidiary abroad in New Jersey (USA). In the early 1970s, the company took over the Swiss precision optics supplier Spectros AG . At the end of the 1980s, Haag-Streit began a targeted acquisition and expansion phase under the direction of CEO Walter Inäbnit . The areas of pneumology and neurosurgery became more and more important.

Today the eight production companies, Haag-Streit AG , Spectros AG , Möller-Wedel GmbH & Co. KG , Clement Clarke Int. Ltd. , John Weiss Ltd. , Ipro GmbH , Möller-Wedel Optical , Comlab and Reliance Inc. The most important production sites are in Switzerland, Germany, England and the USA.

In March 2018, the takeover of Haag-Streit AG by Metall Zug AG was announced.
