Herzwil is a village near Niederwangen in the municipality of Köniz in the canton of Bern in Switzerland .
General
The hamlet of Herzwil is located south of the city of Bern , at the intersection of the streets between Köniz and Niederwangen on the one hand and Oberwangen and Liebewil on the other. It is a small farming village with only seven farms and 53 inhabitants. Several of the more than 100-year-old typical Bernese farms have been preserved in their original state and are listed as historical monuments . The site, which is also protected, is considered to be one of the most beautiful in Switzerland in terms of its scenic location, building stock and undisturbed surroundings.
The majority of the population works in agriculture . In the six farms, arable farming, dairy farming, suckler cow husbandry, pig breeding and pig fattening are mainly carried out.
history
The first documentary mention (1255) is "Hertswile". This name indicates the “Wil” of the “Hert” and can be traced back to the Romans . The "Wil" comes from the name hamlet , which in turn indicates the location of a Roman villa. The existence of a villa was attested by finds (1850) on the "Ziegelacker", where parts of a Roman heating system were found.
Over the centuries the original name “Hertswile” became “Hertswil”, “Hertzwyl”, “Herzwyl” and today's Herzwil. Thus the place name has no relation to the actual word " heart ".
From the large, ornate and painted farmhouses you can easily see that the Herzwiler were mostly wealthy farmers in the 17th and 18th centuries . Two of these long-established families, the "Spycher" and the "Winzenried", still live in Herzwil today.
