Werner Schwarz (artist, 1918)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Werner Schwarz (born July 18, 1918 in Köniz near Bern , † May 17, 1994 in Bern) was a Swiss artist.

Life

Werner Schwarz's parents ran a farm and he was the youngest of five children. Contrary to the traditional role expected of the youngest farmer's son to take over the farm, Schwarz opted for handicrafts. He completed a four-year apprenticeship as a period furniture draftsman in Bern, after which he worked as a restorer . He was interested in homeopathy , herbal medicine and organic farming from an early age . He also loved art history , especially the old masters Albrecht Dürer and Leonardo da Vinci . After his active military service in 1942, he moved into his own workshop in an old “wooden hut”, which in 1971 was to become his permanent place of residence and work. From 1940, Schwarz worked as a freelance painter and devoted himself primarily to landscape painting , which he carried out outdoors or based on sketches made on site in the studio. He is also known for his church windows made from old bottles. At the beginning of 1950 he was fascinated by geometry and symbolism of numbers and inspired to create geometric constructions. His mandalas are spiritually related to those of Emma Kunz .

Schwarz began to travel, where he mainly influenced Greenland and India artistically . So he stayed in Greenland in 1961 and 1966 and in 1962 traveled overland with his artist friend Ernesto Oeschger to India, which became his spiritual adopted home. Other countries he traveled to were France , Turkey , Morocco , Gran Canaria , Peru , Canada , South Africa , Indonesia , the USA and Algeria , and in the 1980s he visited Moscow , Leningrad , Samarkand , Romania and China, among others . Schwarz was able to satisfy his spiritual interests, his thirst for research and his thirst for knowledge through his extensive travels. Schwarz documented this in numerous of his films, photographs and drawings. 1967 began a friendship with Rosmarie Finger, who became his closest confidante.

Schwarz also undertook photographic and film experiments. At the Solothurn Film Festival in 1976 his film “Dazwischen” and in 1980 the production “Punktum” were shown. He was the artistic mentor of the radio presenter Dänu Boemle , who was also ambitious in painting , in its initial phase. Shortly before his death, Schwarz set up his foundation.
