Bertalan Székely

Bertalan Székely (Germanized Bartholomäus Székely ; born May 8, 1835 in Cluj , † August 21, 1910 in Mátyásföld near Budapest ) was an important Hungarian painter of the Romantic period . He became known as a representative of history painting .

Life

Bertalan Székely studied between 1851 and 1855 at the Vienna Academy with Johann Nepomuk Geiger and Carl Rahl . In 1855 he returned to Transylvania , where he earned a living by teaching art and painting signs. In 1858 he worked on the estate of Count Aichelburg in Marchendorf, where he also married.

In the winter of 1859 he went to Munich to continue his studies with Karl Theodor von Piloty . It was there that his famous self-portrait was made. Gradually he turned to the stormy periods of Hungarian history and loaded his works with messages for his contemporaries.

In 1862 he went to Pest . In 1863 he took part in a competition that he won with the painting Escape of Emperor Karl VII (Munich, Bavarian National Museum ). He used the prize money to finance a trip to Holland and Paris, from where he returned in 1864.

He reached the height of his work in the 1870s. After the 1880s, Székely also tried wall painting. His main works can be seen in the Matthias Church in Budapest, in the Cathedral of Pécs , in the Budapest Opera and in the City Hall of Kecskemét .

From 1871 he was an art teacher at an art school, which he also headed as director from 1902. In 1905 he was appointed director of the Second Master School.

Honors

A memorial museum has been set up in his home in Szada.
