Peter Johann Nepomuk Geiger (born January 11, 1805 in Vienna ; † October 29, 1880 there ) was an Austrian painter and draftsman .

Life

Geiger came from a family of sculptors and initially intended to devote himself to the same subject, but soon found his field in drawing and painting. His illustrations for Anton Ziegler's "Vaterländische Immortellen" (1841) established his reputation. A large number of other illustrations for historical and poetical works followed by 1848, as well as several oil paintings for members of the imperial house.

In 1850 he accompanied Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Austria on his trip to the Orient and after his return home he developed an extremely fruitful activity. In 1853 he became a professor at the art academy in his hometown. Geiger created several works for the court; u. a. For Archduke Ferdinand Max he made a cycle of depictions from the works of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , Friedrich Schiller and William Shakespeare and for Archduke Karl Ludwig of Austria several genre paintings from oriental life.

Geiger found his final resting place in an honorary grave in the Hütteldorfer Friedhof in Vienna.
