The University of Architecture and Urban Planning "Ion Mincu" ( Romanian : Universitatea de Arhitectură și Urbanism Ion Mincu - in the abbreviation: UAUIM ) is a specialized state university for architecture and urban planning based in Bucharest .

background

In 1864 an architecture school was established by royal decree, but it found hardly any pupils; most architects studied at the Paris École des Beaux-Arts . Following their example, the Romanian Architects' Association founded a private architecture school on October 15, 1892, under the leadership of Ion Mincu . With the educational reform of 1897 it became the national school for architecture, within the state school of fine arts. In 1904 it became independent, renamed the Academy of Architecture in 1931 and granted all academic rights. In 1952 it became the Ion Mincu Institute for Architecture (IAIM for short), and in 1997 it was given its current name. Emil Barbu Popescu has been the rector of the university since 2000 .

During the 1960s of the Warsaw Pact and the 1990s of political and technological change, the UAUIM became a focal point of social development. It is regarded as a progressive and socially critical training center and the most important architecture school in Romania.
