The National University of the Arts Bucharest ( Romanian : Universitatea Nationala de Arte Bucuresti - often abbreviated as UNArte ) is the most important art school in Romania . It sees itself as a reflection of contemporary Romanian art and culture. It is based in the capital Bucharest .

history

The National Art School , the first art school in Bucharest, was founded on October 5, 1864 by Alexandru Ioan Cuza and built up with the help of the artists Theodor Aman and Gheorghe Tattarescu .

In 1904 the Bucharest University of Applied Arts was founded. It was established by Spiru Haret and directed during the first years. A higher education law from 1931 turned the Romanian art colleges into art academies. During the 1950s, specialist departments were added, including the "Nicolae Grigorescu" Institute for Plastic Art .

In 1990 the institute changed its name to Bucharest Art Academy , 1995 to University of the Arts and 2002 to National University of Arts Bucharest .
