Theodor Aman (born March 20, 1831 in Câmpulung-Muscel , † August 19, 1891 in Bucharest ) was a Romanian painter of genre painting and historicism as well as wood engraver and thus one of the country's first and most famous artists of Arumanian origin. He is seen as an important predecessor of impressionism . His grandson, the post-impressionist Horațiu Dimitriu, was also a painter.

biography

Aman first learned as a student of Constantin Lecca and Carol Wallenstein at the art schools in Craiova and Bucharest, until he switched to Michel-Martin Drolling and François-Édouard Picot in Paris in 1850/51 . In 1853 he exhibited for the first time in the Salon de Paris , before moving to what was then Constantinople (now Istanbul ) and then to the Crimean peninsula , where he was able to collect impressions for his most important historical compositions, the themes of which were very closely related to those of the time up-and-coming Romanian national ideals. His most famous work " The Battle of Alma " was shown at the 1855 World's Fair in Paris.

When he returned to his Wallachian homeland, he was ennobled by the then Prince Barbu Dimitrie Știrbei , who also granted him a scholarship to study in Paris. Among other things, he attended the Barbizon School , whose way of painting landscapes and portraits greatly influenced his own painting style. After a short stay in Rome , Aman returned to Wallachia , where he founded the national art school in Bucharest in 1863 at the side of Gheorghe Tattarescu , which he directed until his death in 1891. He is buried in the largest cemetery in Bucharest, the Cimitirul Bellu .
