history

1961 to 1989

The pedagogical institute with four faculties was founded by decree 654/1961 of the then education minister Ilie G. Murgulescu . The institute consisted of the faculties:

  • Faculty of Literature
  • Faculty of Mathematics
  • Faculty of Physics and Chemistry
  • Faculty of Science.

In 1961 the institute had 198 students and 31 employees. The institute was later expanded to include a course in history and geography.

With the decree 209/1977 the institute was recognized as an institution of higher education. At this point in time, some courses in the natural sciences were discontinued, for which, however, new courses in the areas of welding technology, water technology, petroleum technology and petrochemistry were created. In 1984 the institute was reorganized so that only engineering degrees could be obtained.

Since 1990

Government resolution 209/1990, signed by Prime Minister Petre Roman , transformed the institute into a university, and a year later the university was given its current name by decree 4894/1991 of the Ministry of Education. The university is named after the poet Ovid , who spent his last years in the former Greek province of Tomis, which was the name of today's Constanța 2000 years ago. Since 1990 the number of faculties has increased to 16.
