The University of Petru Maior in Târgu Mureș ( Romania ) ( Romanian: Universitatea Petru Maior ) - until 1996 only University of Târgu Mureș - was named after the historian and philologist Petru Maior (approx. 1756-1821). It was founded in 1960 with a focus on teacher training and developed into a technical university in 1991 and a university in 1995. Around 79% of the students were enrolled in bachelor's programs in October 2012, 21% in master’s programs, and there were also 26 doctoral students.
