Ciprian Porumbescu

Ciprian Porumbescu (born October 14, 1853 in Șipote in Bukovina , today Shepit in Ukraine , † June 6, 1883 in Stupca ) was a Romanian composer .

Porumbescu was born the son of an Orthodox priest and studied music in Suceava , Chernivtsi and at the Conservatory of the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna . There he also met Anton Bruckner and Franz Krenn . He worked as Kapellmeister in Bucharest .

His works include the operetta Crai nou (1882), the former Romanian national anthem Trei culori and the Albanian national anthem Himni i Flamurit (originally Romanian name: Pe-al nostru steag e scris Unire ).

The Conservatory "Ciprian Porumbescu" Bucharest was named after him - until it was renamed the National Music University Bucharest in 1990 .
