history

In 1978, the Federal Chancellor Adenauer House Foundation was the first direct federal memorial foundation for a politician in Germany. This was followed in December 1986 by the Reich President Friedrich Ebert Memorial as the second federal foundation. In the 1990s, the German Bundestag passed laws on the establishment of three further memorial foundations : the Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt Foundation , the Federal President Theodor Heuss House Foundation (both founded in 1994) and the Otto von Bismarck Foundation (Founded in 1996). Since May 24, 2011, these foundations have appeared in public under the name of the Federal Politician Memorial Foundation . At the beginning of 2017, the sixth Federal Chancellor Helmut Schmidt Foundation was added.

tasks

The political memorial foundations are based in places that are closely connected to the lives of these personalities: Rhöndorf ( Konrad Adenauer ), Heidelberg ( Friedrich Ebert ), Stuttgart ( Theodor Heuss ), Berlin ( Willy Brandt ), Friedrichsruh ( Otto von Bismarck ) and Hamburg ( Helmut Schmidt ). They present permanent exhibitions that inform about the political thought and work as well as the historical legacy of these statesmen against the background of the respective historical epoch.

In addition, the foundations offer museum educational offers, special exhibitions, seminars, lectures, eyewitness talks and panel discussions. They carry out independent historical research, hold scientific conferences, issue publications and make archives and specialist libraries available for use.
