According to the establishment law, the foundation should

  1. a contribution to the understanding of contemporary history and the further development of the Federal Republic of Germany as well
  2. to process, present and further develop Germany's responsibility in foreign, security and economic policy in the European and global environment
  3. It is also intended to contribute to deepening and expanding knowledge of the geopolitical and economic challenges of the 21st century in Europe and around the world.

In addition to the historical work, there are three program lines: “Europe and International Politics”, “Global Markets and Social Justice” and “Democracy and Society”. They take up thematic impulses from Helmut Schmidt's biography and deal with current political issues. Particular attention is paid to the future of transatlantic relations: the foundation is already organizing several scientific conferences and, together with the German Marshall Fund, has set up a high-caliber expert commission that is due to present recommendations by autumn 2020.

The foundation works closely with the private Helmut and Loki Schmidt Foundation (HLS), established in 1992, and also with the Friedrich Ebert Foundation and the Federal Archives on archive issues .

In December 1961, Helmut and Loki Schmidt and their daughter Susanne moved into a house in Hamburg-Langenhorn . Here Helmut Schmidt received friends, politicians and artists; His guests included Valéry Giscard d'Estaing , Henry Kissinger , Juan Carlos I , Leonid Brezhnev , Oskar Kokoschka and the members of the "Friday Society" founded by Schmidt.

After Schmidt's death on November 10, 2015, the private Helmut and Loki Schmidt Foundation , founded by the couple in 1992, inherited the property, which is to be preserved as an authentic historical site. Due to the spatial structure, guided tours are only possible to a limited extent and are only offered by the BKHS.

Helmut Schmidt archive

The Helmut Schmidt archive is also located in Langenhorn, where the private estates of Helmut and Loki Schmidt and their close friend Karl Wilhelm Berkhan are kept. It includes over 3,500 files, 284 photo albums and an extensive library. After Schmidt had a small library building added back in 1978, the Schmidts acquired the neighboring semi-detached house in 1992 to accommodate the archive. Another extension followed in 2006/07, and since then the bequests have been stored in a separate storage room.

The archive also belongs to the private Helmut and Loki Schmidt Foundation . Employees of the BKHS develop and record the estates kept here and thus create the conditions for their public use.
