Octavian Ursu (* 28. October 1967 in Bucharest , Romania ) is a German politician of the CDU and since 2019 mayor of Goerlitz .

Life

Ursu ​​grew up in Bucharest and graduated from high school there in 1986. He then enrolled at the National Music University in Bucharest and studied music and pedagogy, which he completed in 1990 with the state examination.

In 1990 he moved to Germany, where he accepted a position as solo trumpeter in the Neue Lausitzer Philharmonie in Görlitz . At the same time, he began studying music at the Robert Schumann University in Düsseldorf , where he obtained the degree of musician in 1994.

Between 1998 and 2014 Octavian Ursu also taught at the University of Church Music and at the music school “J. A. Hiller ” in Görlitz. From 2000 to 2010 he was Chairman of the Works Council of the Görlitz Music Theater and from 2010 to 2014 Chairman of the General Works Council of the Gerhart-Hauptmann-Theater Görlitz-Zittau .

Urzu is married and has two daughters. He is of the Romanian Orthodox denomination .

politics

Ursu ​​has been a member of the CDU since 2009. In the same year he moved into the Görlitz city council and became deputy chairman of the parliamentary group. In 2010 he was elected chairman of the Görlitz CDU city association and again just one year later as a member of the Görlitz CDU district executive. In the 6th Saxon state elections in 2014, he was a direct candidate in constituency 58, Görlitz 2 , with 37.1% of the first votes in the Saxon parliament.

In 2015 he was elected to the Senate of Culture of the Free State of Saxony and the Board of Trustees of the Saxon State Center for Political Education . In the same year he also took over the chairmanship of the temporary working group “ Integration and Immigration ” and was appointed as a member of the state committee “ Internal Security ”. Since November 2015 he has been an elected assessor in the state executive committee of the CDU Saxony and chairman of the CDU in the district of Görlitz . In autumn 2016 Octavian Ursu was sent to the Board of Trustees of the Development and Peace Foundation by the Prime Minister of the Free State of Saxony .

In the election of the mayor of the city of Görlitz in 2019, he came in the first ballot with 30.3% of the votes, the second best result behind the candidate of the AfD , Sebastian Wippel (36.4%). After Franziska Schubert , the green member of the state parliament, who was just behind Ursu, and the left candidate did not run again, he received 55.2% of the votes in the second ballot on June 16, 2019 according to the preliminary result and was won with 14,043 votes against 11,390 for the AfD- Candidates elected for the new Lord Mayor. Urzu took office on August 1, 2019.

Volunteering

In addition to his work as a member of the state parliament , Octavian Ursu is committed to musical and cultural institutions in the Görlitz area. Among other things, he is chairman of the music school sponsoring association “J. A. Hiller ”in Görlitz, member of the board of the Görlitzer Volkshochschule eV and member of the board of trustees of the Evangelical Cultural Foundation Görlitz.
