Vasile Pârvan (1882-1927)

Vasile Pârvan (born September 28, 1882 in Huruieşti , † June 26, 1927 in Bucharest ) was a Romanian ancient historian , archaeologist , epigraphist , university professor and essayist .

Youth and education

Vasile Pârvan was born in 1882 in the village of Perchiu belonging to the municipality of Huruieşti in the Moldovan district of Bacău . He was the first child of the teacher Andrei Parvan and Aristita Chiriac. He was given the first name Vasile after his uncle, the philosopher and Romanian minister Vasile Conta , who was a cousin of his mother. Pârvan grew up in modest circumstances, attended elementary school in Bereşti and then, from 1893 to 1900, the high school "Gheorge Roşca Codreanu" in Bârlad . He then studied from 1900 to 1904 at the Faculty of Literature and Philosophy at the University of Bucharest , where Nicolae Iorga , Ioan Bogdan and Dimitrie Onciul were among his professors. After completing his studies, further courses followed in Germany, in Jena , Berlin and Breslau , which led to economic and health problems for him, as he had to earn his living as a teacher in Bacau and Iași at the same time . In 1909 in Breslau he received his doctorate cum laude from Conrad Cichorius with a thesis on the nationalities of merchants in the Roman Empire .

During his studies, in 1900, Pârvan made his journalism debut at the Noua revistă română (New Romanian Magazine). From 1902 he worked for the Convorbiri literare (literary conversations), from the following year also for Voința națională (national voice), Tribuna poporului (people's stand ), Luceafăru (The Evening Star) and others. In 1906 he joined the Frăția Bunilor Români (Brotherhood of the Romanian Federation) and began to write for their magazines Semănătoru (The Sower) and Neamul românesc (The Romanian Nation). From 1907 he worked for Viața românească (Romanian life) and the Gazeta generală a învățământului (General Gazette for Education).

After receiving his doctorate in 1909, Pârvan became an associate professor, and from 1913 he was appointed professor at the Department of Ancient History, Epigraphy and Greco-Roman Antiquities at the University of Bucharest ( Catedra de Istorie Veche, Epigrafie și Antichități Greco-Romane a Universității din București ). As early as 1910 he was appointed director of the National Museum of Antiquities ( Muzeul Național de Antichități ). He became a member of several academies and scientific societies in Germany and abroad. In 1911 he became a corresponding member of the Romanian Academy , in 1913 a regular member, 1920 to 1923 Vice-President, 1923 to 1927 General Secretary and 1927 President of the Historical Department. The year 1913 saw him as a founding member of the Institutului de Studii Sud-Est Europene (Institute for South-East European Studies) and as a member of the Commission for Historical Monuments ( Comisia Monumentelor Istorice ). In the same year he married Silvia Cristescu, a granddaughter of his former university professor Ioan Bogdan. In 1914 he became a member of the German Archaeological Institute and a member of the Central Committee of the Culture League ( Comitetul central al Ligii Culturale ). From 1914 to 1916 and 1921 to 1926 he directed the archaeological excavations in Histria . During the further course of the First World War, he fled first to Iași , on the Romanian-Russian border, in 1916 , and then to Odessa ( Russia ) in 1917 , where his wife died giving birth to her child.

In 1919 Pârvan became professor at the Faculty of Literature and Philosophy, History Section, Universitatea “Regele Ferdinand I” in Cluj , and in 1920 director of the Accademia di Romania in Roma in Rome . His membership in the Society for the Editing of National Culture ( Societatii de editura “Cultura Nationala” ) and the beginning of his activity as a permanent delegate at the Union Académique Internationale also date back to 1920 . In order to solve unresolved research questions related to the history of Dacia, he organized a series of systematic archaeological excavations , especially at sites from the late Iron Age . His investigations in this regard culminated in the publication Getica (1926), which is considered to be his most important work. In 1923 he became secretary of the Romanian PEN Club ( PEN Clubului român ). In 1924 he became a member of the Pontificia Accademia Romana di Archeologia and the Reale Società Romana di Storia Patria , both in Rome. The year 1926 saw him as a founding member of the International Committee for Historical Studies in Geneva and as a visiting professor at the Sorbonne in Paris . In 1927 he became a member of the Academia dei Lincei in Rome.

Passionately absorbed in his work, Vasile Pârvan ignored an appendicitis from which he suffered. By the time he was operated on, it was too late to save his life. Pârvan died at the age of only 44 at the height of his career. He was buried on the Cimitirul Bellu in Bucharest. In his will he left his fortune to the Romanian Academy and his library to the Romanian School in Rome.
