University square and building in Bucharest

The University Square ( Romanian Piața Universității ) is located in downtown Bucharest , in front of the university there . In the square there are four statues depicting Ion Heliade-Rădulescu , Michael the Brave , Gheorghe Lazăr and Spiru Haret .

In May and June 1990, University Square was the scene of protests against the election of Ion Iliescu as Romanian President, which were then forcibly disbanded by miners summoned from the Jiu Valley . This event was known as Mineriada in Romanian and had a negative effect on Iliescu's reputation at home and abroad.

The National Theater Bucharest ( Teatrul Național "Ion Luca Caragiale" Bucureşti ) and the InterContinental Hotel, the tallest building in the city until 2004, are also located on University Square.
