The National Theater Bucharest ( Romanian Teatrul Național "Ion Luca Caragiale" , abbreviated TNB ) is a public cultural institution in Bucharest . The theater, named after the writer Ion Luca Caragiale , is subordinate to the Romanian Ministry of Culture and is located in the central Lipscani district , opposite the university .

history

In April 1836 the “Philharmonic Society” from Bucharest bought the Cîmpinencii inn in order to build the new Romanian national theater in its place. At first she collected money and building materials, but in 1840 the ruler Alexandru Ghica decided that the state had to build the structure with its own money. The project was approved on June 4, 1840. The ruler George Bibescu suggested a new location before the theater was built: the former Filaret inn , which had to be demolished after the earthquake in 1838.

Construction work did not begin until 1847, but was interrupted by the revolution of 1848 a year later. In 1852 the theater was completed.

During the Second World War , the German Army was commissioned to destroy the telephone palace that was adjacent to the National Theater. The goal was missed and instead the theater was destroyed. The area on which the theater once stood remained vacant until 1990 when the Novotel was built there, the portal of which is modeled on the portal of the destroyed theater.

The current building of the National Theater was built in 1973 and heavily modified in 1983–1984. In 2012–2014 the building was restored to its original condition from 1973.
