Novotel is an international hotel chain . It was founded in 1967 and is the origin of the French Accor group. The Novotel hotels are upper middle class and mostly have three or four stars .

history

In 1967 Paul Dubrule and Gerard Pélisson founded a company to operate hotels. The first hotel opened in the same year at Lille Airport under the “Novotel” brand. When designing the concept, the founders were guided by American hotels that were located in suburbs or on major highways. At this point in time, the French hotel industry was dominated by budget and luxury houses; an offer in the mid-price range was still hardly available. Novotel was able to establish itself successfully in the market, with 23 hotels opened in the first five years. With Novotel, Mercure and Ibis , Accor rose to become the market leader in Europe by the end of the 1970s.

In the 1980s, Novotel expanded not only in France, but also beyond, including Germany. The concept of the chain changed step-by-step: While the previous preferred locations were conveniently located, Novotel was increasingly opening houses in city centers in the 1980s. Conferences became more important for the business, and the furnishings of the houses were upgraded. The changes meant that business travelers made up the majority of the guests. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Accor expanded its business to the new federal states and other Eastern European states. This also applied to the expansion of Novotel.

At the beginning of the 1990s, Novotel had around 37,000 rooms in 267 hotels worldwide. The main focus was on building new hotels to ensure a uniform standard across Europe. Novotel was one of the first hotel chains to abolish exhibition prices. In 1993 a new corporate design was introduced and print and TV advertising was promoted in order to anchor the brand even more firmly in the core markets. In addition, Novotel reduced the central control of its hotels so that the individual hotels could act more independently. In 1997, Novotel again started a comprehensive modernization of its German and Austrian locations.

In 2000, Novotel opened the first all-business hotel in Singapore . At the same time, the chain focused more on tourists again, for example through special weekend rates. In 2002 Accor took a stake in Dorint, which gave some hotels the name "Dorint Novotel". After the two companies separated in 2007, this was canceled again. In the same year, the hotel chain initiated another phase of expansion with the opening of the Novotel at Munich Airport . Since 2010, hotels that only offer suites have also been part of Novotel. Initially under the “Suitehotel” brand, the chain then operated as “Suite Novotel” and is now known as “Novotel Suites”.

For some years now, digitization has also played an important role at Novotel: In cooperation with Microsoft, a hotel room of the future was developed that enables music to be controlled or messages to be called up using gestures, for example. The public areas are also equipped with a Surface table and an Xbox 360 , for example . The hotel chain introduced a modular reservation system that allows guests to book late check-out and other personalized services online.

concept

Novotel has around 496 hotels in 58 countries. They are operated both by themselves and by franchisees . The regional focus is traditionally in Europe, although Novotel is present on all continents. The equipment of the hotels corresponds to the upper middle class. Novotel caters to both business travelers and families with children. The chain's flagship opened in mid-2017 at Canary Wharf in London. As part of the “Planet 21” sustainability program, for example, it was equipped with a herb garden and a beehive .

Novotel's social commitment includes sponsoring the Luxembourg volleyball competition “Novotel Cup”.
