Turan Ceylan (born June 12, 1968 in Tokat ) is a former Turkish wrestler . He became welterweight world champion in free style in 1994 .

Career

Turan Ceylan started wrestling in Tokat in 1978. He preferred the free style. He belonged to wrestling clubs in Tokat and Ankara . The trainer he owed the most to was Yakup Topuz. He contested his first international championship in 1982 at the age of 14. He won the European Youth Championship in Manchester in the weight class up to 40 kg body weight. Over the years he grew from being lightweight to welterweight, which at that time had its weight limit of 74 kg. In this weight class he played most of his competitions. In addition to wrestling, he trained as a technician. After finishing his wrestling career, however, he worked as a wrestler trainer at a sports club and at the Turkish Wrestling Association.

In 1988 Turan Ceylan achieved a good result in a championship in the junior division. He took 4th place at the Junior European Championships (Espoirs) in Wałbrzych in the lightweight behind Alexander Leipold , FRG, Andre Backhaus , GDR, and Paschrudin Salibekow, USSR.

In 1990 Turan Ceylan first took part in a senior world championship. But he lost there against Rahmat Sukra from Bulgaria, was eliminated and could not place. In 1991 he started at the world championship in Varna in welterweight and reached the 9th place there. He could not qualify for participation in the 1992 Olympic Games. He failed in Turkey because of Selahattin Yiğit. In 1993 he competed at both the European Championships in Istanbul and the World Championships in Toronto. Both times he achieved good results with a 6th place in Istanbul and a 4th place in Toronto, but both times he narrowly missed the medal ranks.

1994 was the most successful year in the wrestling career of Turan Ceylan. He won first at the European Championships in Rome welterweight behind Nasir Gadžihanov from Russia and ahead of Alexander Leipold and Alan Msokow , Ukraine, one silver medal and in August of that year he was in Istanbul Victor Peicov , Moldova, Behrouz Yari Kalani , Iran and Alberto Rodríguez Hernández , Cuba, world champion. In 1995 he won another silver medal behind Alexander Leipold at the European Championships in Friborg / Switzerland. At the 1995 World Cup, Turan Ceylan was not used.

In 1996 he started at the European Championships in Budapest, but did not get beyond a 7th place in the welterweight division. Completely disappointing for him was his start at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. He lost there against Rodion Kertanti from Slovakia and against Alberto Rodríguez Hernández and came only to 18th place. Then he ended his active wrestling career.
