Suolahti is a formerly independent city with around 5,400 inhabitants in central Finland . It is located 40 km north of Jyväskylä on the south bank of Lake Keitele .

Suolahti existed as a political municipality from 1932 to 2006, since 1977 it had city rights. In addition to the main town of Suolahti, the city included the villages of Alkula, Honkola, Kalliolahti, Keskusta, Kylänmäki, Likolahti, Mutapohja, Nakertaja and Paatela. On January 1, 2007, Suolahti merged with the neighboring communities Äänekoski and Sumiainen ; the new city only continues the name Äänekoski.

The previously distinctly rural community developed into an important industrial location after it was connected to the Finnish railway network in 1898; In the same year a large sawmill was built here. Today the tractor manufacturer Valtra 's plant is the largest employer with 670 employees ; Around 10,000 tractors are manufactured there every year. The plywood plant of the Finnforest Group follows with 600 employees .

Since the completion of the Keitele-Päijänne Canal in 1993, Suoalhti has also been connected to the waterway network of the Finnish Lake District .
