The Metsä Group (until February 2012 Metsäliitto ) is a Finnish company in the paper and forestry industry. The group is the largest cooperative company in Europe in this business area . The Metsä Group is owned by the Metsäliitto Cooperative , which in turn is owned by around 116,000 Finnish forest owners. The company's headquarters are in Helsinki .

At the beginning of the 20th century, several Finnish forest owners joined forces to form the Metsäliitto Cooperative in order to have a better market position in price negotiations for their timber . In 1949, the company opened its first sawmills and, in addition to producing lumber, also began producing wood pulp and paper .

Forestry became an important part of the Finnish economy and the company was able to expand internationally in the early 1960s.

The Metsä Group is a subsidiary of the Metsäliitto Cooperative , which in turn is owned by around 116,000 Finnish forest owners. It is divided into five divisions, which  cover the entire process of wood pulp and paper production .

The Metsä Group operates in a total of 30 countries.
