The Green Mountain Railway is a former railway company in Maine ( United States ). Their only route was a 1.83 kilometer long rack railway from Bar Harbor to the top of Green Mountain (now Cadillac Mountain ) on Mount Desert Island , the largest island in the US state of Maine. The railway was opened in 1883 and was mainly used to connect the hotel on the mountain top to the ferry port. There were no intermediate stops. The slope of the track was 30%. As with its model, the Mount Washington Cog Railway in New Hampshire, the unusual 4 foot 8 inch (1422 mm) gauge was used in the construction of the Green Mountain Railway.

The railway was shut down and dismantled as early as 1890. The company was dissolved three years later. The railway's two steam locomotives, built by Manchester Locomotive Works in 1883 , were sold to the Mount Washington Cog Railway in 1895, where they are still in service today.

A music group based on the island today bears the name of the railway.
