Joakim Ryan (born June 17, 1993 in Rumson , New Jersey ) is an American ice hockey player of Swedish origin who has been under contract with the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League since July 2019, where he plays the position of defender . Prior to that, Ryan was active in organizing the San Jose Sharks for four seasons . He is the son of the former Swedish tennis player Catarina Lindqvist-Ryan .
Career
Ryan, the son of an American and a Swede, played between 2008 and 2010 at both the renowned Christian Brothers Academy and in the junior program of the New Jersey Devils . For the 2010/11 season, the defender moved to the United States Hockey League for one season , where he won the championship in the form of the Clark Cup with the Dubuque Fighting Saints . He then attended Cornell University for four years , where he ran parallel to his studies for the ice hockey team in ECAC Hockey , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . During this time he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2012 in the seventh round in 198th place by the San Jose Sharks from the National Hockey League .
After completing his studies, the defender switched to the professional field at the end of the 2014/15 season and, after signing a contract with the San Jose Sharks, played for their farm team , the Worcester Sharks , in the American Hockey League . After their relocation, he was part of the San Jose Barracuda squad from the beginning of the 2015/16 season , where he developed into one of the top performers. In early February 2017, he was finally called up for the first time in the NHL San Joses squad, but had to wait until the following October for his NHL debut. There he was part of the regular squad from that point on, but was not always in the starting line-up, so that over the two years he only played around 65 percent of the possible games. In the summer of 2019, the management waived a further obligation, so that the defender switched to the Los Angeles Kings as a free agent .
International
Ryan represented Sweden - which means he decided to play internationally for his mother's country of birth - in the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2010 , in which the Swedish team finished the tournament in third place. The defender contributed two scorer points in six tournament games. There was a gate underneath. Furthermore, Ryan played - in addition to the U17 selection of the Tre Kronor - between 2010 and 2012 for the U18, U19 and U20 national teams on the international stage. He only represented the U20 selection in the World Junior A Challenge of 2011. There he remained pointless in three missions.
