Joseph Renner (around 1905) on the organ of Regensburg Cathedral by Johann Heinssen from 1836

Joseph Renner junior (born February 17, 1868 in Regensburg ; † July 17, 1934 there ) was a German organist and composer .

Career

Joseph Renner junior received his first training from his father ( Joseph Renner senior , student of Carl Proske , organist, music teacher and choir director in Regensburg ). From 1883 he was a student at the church music school in Regensburg (today: University for Catholic Church Music and Music Education Regensburg ) (studies with Franz Xaver Haberl , Michael Georg Haller and Joseph Hanisch), then he studied in Munich for two years at the Royal Music School, among other things Joseph Rheinberger organ and composition . In 1887 he received the Dr. Königswarther Prize for Composition and in the autumn of the same year he was employed as a choir director and music director in Bludenz in Vorarlberg .

In 1893 he succeeded Hanisch as cathedral organist in Regensburg . He worked as an organ expert for the diocese of Regensburg and as choir director at the Niedermünster Church. From 1895 he was a lecturer at the church music school. In 1914 he was appointed professor.

“As a composer, he was extremely valued by his contemporaries. His church music works, especially the organ compositions, were spread in Regensburg and Munich but also beyond the borders of the two cities. The secular compositions, however, received little attention. Renner's compositional work includes sacred vocal and instrumental works , secular choral and solo songs as well as larger compositions such as the Singspiel Joseph Haydn from 1893 or the Romantic Overture op. 38 from 1908. In April 1916, the Munich Hösl Quartet played its string quartet op .32 for the first time in Regensburg. Church music and organ compositions form the largest group in Renner's oeuvre, which can be explained by his work as an organist. In addition to his work as an organist, teacher and composer, Renner also devoted himself to theoretical music as a reviewer and music writer. During his time in Bludenz he wrote his first essays in which he increasingly advocated his teacher Joseph Rheinberger . "

He published five masses by Rheinberger and discussed them in the 1909 Musical Yearbook.

Joseph Renner developed his compositional style on the basis of the art of Joseph Reinberger and the Munich School. As with his teacher, the organ was the starting point. With a skilful contrapuntal work Renner combines the rich colors of romantic chromatic harmony. Renowned artists such as Max Reger and Karl Straube have recognized his work.
