The station Altenkirchen (Westerw) is the station of the Rhineland-Palatinate district town Altenkirchen (Westerwald) . It belongs to station category 6. It is located on route kilometer 65.1 of the Limburg – Altenkirchen railway , known as the Oberwesterwaldbahn , and on route kilometer 61.1 of the Engers – Au railway , also known as the Holzbachtalbahn .
history
The station Altenkirchen (Westerwald) on 1 April 1885 the stretch Altenkirchen- Hachenburg of the upper Westerwaldbahn designated Limburg-Altenkirchen railway opened. With the opening of the Siershahn – Altenkirchen (Holzbachtalbahn) railway in 1887, it became a crossing station . When the Altenkirchen – Au (Sieg) railway line opened on May 1st of the same year, Altenkirchen station became a traffic junction in the front Westerwald .
After the Second World War , Uerdinger rail buses ran on the route from Engers via Siershahn and Altenkirchen to Au (Sieg) Uerdinger . Up until 1975 there were regular steam locomotives on the line .
On June 2, 1984, passenger traffic on the Holzbachtalbahn was stopped. Freight traffic still takes place from Altenkirchen today.
On 23 May 1993 the route between Au (Sieg) and old churches was converted to signalized train control, at the same time there was a Vertaktung the local rail on the entire line of Au over Altenkirchen of Limburg .

The lines RB28 (Limburg – Westerburg – Altenkirchen – Au (Sieg)) and RB95 (Au (Sieg) –Wissen (Sieg) –Siegen) were merged into one continuous line (RB90) as part of this measure.

Altenkirchen (Westerwald) station is on the Oberwesterwaldbahn Au (Sieg) –Altenkirchen (Westerwald) - Westerburg –Limburg (Lahn) ( KBS 461), which was operated by the vectus Verkehrsgesellschaft between December 2004 and December 2014 and has been in operation since December 2014 operated by the Hessische Landesbahn , operating area Dreiländerbahn . Freight transport
Goods traffic still takes place on the Holzbachtalbahn from Altenkirchen. In 2018, DB Cargo took over the operation from the district's own Westerwaldbahn GmbH (WEBA). In the Selters - Raubach –Altenkirchen section , freight customers have been served by rail again since 2006, including a siding in Neitersen and the Schütz container construction company in Selters, where the route now runs right through the factory halls.
Bus transport
The majority of regional bus traffic is carried out by Martin Becker , a company belonging to the Rhenus Veniro group .
There is a bus station on the forecourt of Altenkirchen train station , where regional buses run to the surrounding towns and villages. There is a combined platform between the bus station and platform 2 of Altenkirchen train station , which enables you to switch from trains to buses and vice versa at the same level as the platform.
There are also two parking spaces for taxis and cars at Altenkirchen train station .
Rates
Since August 1st, 2002 the tariff of the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Sieg (VRS) has been recognized as a transitional tariff on the rail routes - but not on the bus routes - in the Altenkirchen district if the start or destination station is in the area of the VRS. The district of Altenkirchen has also been a member of the Rhein-Mosel transport association (VRM) since January 1st, 2009 . The VRM tariff applies to trips within the Altenkirchen district and to other districts that are members of the VRM, e.g. B. in the district of Neuwied . Membership in the VRM enables passengers with network tickets to switch from train to bus or vice versa without having to buy another ticket.
