The two islands together have an area of 81,423 square meters (8.14  hectares ). Of this, 2.8 hectares are on South Brother Island and around 5.3 hectares on North Brother Island.

history

Jacob Ruppert , a brewery owner and later owner of the New York Yankees , had his summer residence on the island, but it burned down in 1909. Nobody has lived on the island since that time; together with the neighboring North Brother Island it is designated as a nature reserve. The Dutch gave them their original name Gezellen (companions).

The island belonged to Ruppert until the late 1930s. In 1944 it was bought by John Gerosa , who wanted to use it as summer accommodation for the employees of his roofing company, the Metropolitan Roofing Supply Company. However, this project was never implemented. In 1975 the city of New York City sold the island to the investment company Hampton Scows Inc. for 10 dollars. Hampton Scows paid property taxes but did not use the island.

In order to be able to use it as a nature reserve, the Public Land Trust bought the island in November 2007 with the support of various organizations and public funds for a price of 2 million dollars and then donated it to the City of New York, which placed it under the municipal park administration.
