The New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, or NYC Parks for short, is an agency of the New York City government that is entrusted with the upkeep and maintenance of public parks in the city. The state parks ( state parks ) in the city, such as the Gantry Plaza State Park are from the New York State Office of Parks managed.

history

Before 1934, each of the five boroughs had its own park authority. Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia commissioned urban planner Robert Moses to combine these into a single authority. This new Department of Parks for New York City took over the administration of the individual agencies. In 1938 the Department was given responsibility for beaches and sidewalks in Coney Island , Rockaway Peninsula, and South Beach from the Borough Presidents Offices . The actual New York City Department of Parks and Recreation was founded in 1976 under Mayor Abraham D. Beame .

tasks

The authority administers around 5,000 parks, playgrounds, bicycle paths and green spaces on around 113 km², which corresponds to around 14 percent of the urban area. This includes more than 800 sports fields, 550 tennis courts, 1,000 playgrounds, 66 bathing establishments, 48 leisure facilities, 17 nature centers, 13 golf courses and around 20 kilometers of public beach. There are also around 1200 monuments, 23 museums and 1,600,000 trees in the city. The largest park maintained by NYC Parks is Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx, covering 11 km² . The city's well-known parks such as Central Park , Prospect Park , Van Cortlandt Park , Flushing-Meadows-Park and the Staten Island Greenbelt are also looked after by NYC Parks (see also the list of parks in New York City ).

In addition to maintenance, NYC Park is also responsible for safety in the parks. It also maintains the Parks Enforcement Patrol (PEP) unit. In addition to the normal police tasks in the parks, there are specialized units such as mounted units , units in the marinas , units that ensure safety at major events and search and rescue units.

Urban Park Rangers

The Urban Park Rangers are a group of rangers who look after visitors in the parks. They offer courses including through schools, support teachers and organized events like Weekend Adventure (Weekend Adventures) and adventure courses (Adventure Course).

Concessions

NYC Parks grants and monitors concessions for all traders in the parks. In 2009 around 500 concessions for the operation of restaurants and kiosks as well as for recreation, which includes the operation of ice skating rinks, horse stables, marinas and golf courses, were awarded, generating around 110 million US dollars .
