The Walden Pond is approximately 26 hectares large kettle hole in the city of Concord in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . It is part of the 100-hectare Walden Pond State Reservation and was entered on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966 , after the lake had been recognized as a National Historic Landmark four years earlier .
Historical meaning
The lake is particularly known for the fact that Henry David Thoreau built a small hut on the north bank and lived there from July 4, 1845 to September 6, 1847 to experiment with a simple lifestyle and philosophical meditation . The location of the hut is marked today by some granite pillars. During this time he completed his work A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers and laid the foundation for Walden, or Life in the Woods .
In 1922, the Walden Pond State Reservation was established around the lake. The entire land - including the remains of Thoreau's hut - was transferred to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts by the heirs of Ralph Waldo Emerson , who had owned it until then, with the condition that the historic character be preserved. The area is now open to the public.
Trivia
In April 2018 it was reported that masses of people made pilgrimages to the lake to experience loneliness. Scientists from New York's Paul Smith College have analyzed that half of the nutrient phosphorus ( phosphate ) in seawater comes from human urine and the other half from agricultural manure. This fertilization of the lake encourages algae growth, which is why the water appears green and cloudy.
