architecture
The house is built in the Saltbox style and therefore has a single-hip, unequal-sided gable roof . This means that John Adams Birthplace has two floors at the front and only one floor at the back. The roof of the half-timbered house is covered with shingles .
history
A dated brick found under a threshold in the southwestern part of the house refers to the year 1681 as the start of construction. The eastern part of John Adams Birthplace may have been built on the foundations of a previous building built around 1650. At that time the land was owned by a William Needham. In 1720 the house was bought by John Adams Sr., who later became the presidential father, along with seven acres of the property.
In 1735, the future US President John Adams was born in this house . He lived here until his marriage in 1764. John Adams Birthplace was owned by the family until 1940 , after which it was given to the City of Quincy. From 1896 to 1950, a branch of the Daughters of the American Revolution used the house as their headquarters.
John Adams Birthplace has been a National Historic Landmark since December 19, 1960 . On October 15, 1966, the house was listed as a listed building on the National Register of Historic Places . Much of the original structure has been preserved. Today, John Adams Birthplace serves the Quincy Historical Society as a museum.
