As Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site one is around 3.5 ha large area in Saugus in the state of Massachusetts of the United States designated it as a National Historic Landmark and National Historic Site in the National Register of Historic Places is registered. In the 17th century it was the location of the first fully integrated ironworks in the USA and today, with its reconstructed buildings, it serves as an industrial museum .

Historical meaning

The Saugus Iron Works were founded by John Winthrop, Jr. in 1646 and operated until 1670. An older facility in Falling Creek, Virginia was destroyed during a war with the Indians and never started production, making the Saugus facility the oldest ironworks in the United States with a fully integrated production process.

The plant was used to convert iron ore into finished products made of cast and wrought iron , including nails . The rolling mill was one of only 15 plants in the world and the only one of its kind in the western hemisphere. Therefore, the work also served as a training ground for metallurgists , after the completion of their training in new ironworks in New England and New Jersey working or they also founded themselves. The property owner's home is the oldest non-Native American home owned by the National Park Service .

The reconstructed structures and machines that can be viewed today include a house, a blast furnace , a forge , a rolling mill, a quay , a shearing machine and a 250 kg drop hammer . It is driven by seven waterwheels , some of which are coupled with large wooden gears for tandem operation.
