Old Place of Mochrum

Old Place of Mochrum , also Mochrum Castle , is a tower house near the Scottish village of Kirkcowan in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . In 1972 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

In the 15th century the lands belonged to the Dunbar clan . John Dunbar had the Tower House, which functions as a clan seat, built between 1474 and the turn of the century. The north wing was built around this time. Probably towards the end of the 16th century a second tower house was added on the south side. Architecturally, it has analogies to Carsluith Castle, built in 1581 .

In the 19th century, John Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute, bought the building, which had fallen into ruin. Until 1874 he had the older west tower restored. The south tower followed between 1877 and 1898. In the course of this, the hall connecting the two towers was added. The north and east wings followed by 1902, some of which were built on the foundations of older buildings. Between 1903 and 1908 the revision of the building was continued by the Scottish architect Robert Weir Schultz . Around 1912 a chapel was set up in the recently built hall.

description

Old Place of Mochrum is located in a sparsely populated region around seven kilometers south of Kirkcowan on the north bank of Mochrum Loch . The third Marquess of Bute , or his son , who had the work continued after the death of his father in 1900, created a stately home from the complex, which formerly consisted of two tower houses with rectangular floor plans . The two defense towers were integrated into a building complex that encloses an inner courtyard on four sides. Natural stone details made of cream-colored sandstone stand out from the quarry stone masonry. The gable roofs covered with gray slate are partly worked with stepped gables . The older west tower has cantilevered, crenellated battlements with corner turrets . On the left a round arched doorway leads to the inner courtyard.
