Matteo Carcassi (* 1792 or 1793 in Florence ; † January 16, 1853 in Paris ) was an Italian guitarist , pianist and composer , whose guitar lessons are still taught today. He lived in Paris for most of his life and gave guitar concerts in Germany , London and Italy . Little is known of his life. He was probably related to the various well-known musical instrument makers named Carcassi .

Life

Matteo Carcassi was born in Florence around 1792, the exact date of birth is unknown. He lived in Paris by 1816 at the latest and is listed in a Parisian musicians directory from 1820 as a composer, guitar and piano teacher, residing at 8 rue Grange Batelière , where he also gave concerts. In 1819 he met the French guitarist and music publisher Antoine Meissonnier in Germany . His first publications followed in 1820, most of his works were published by Meissonnier in Paris and by B. Schott's Sons in Mainz . In the 1820s Carcassi made several trips, so he gave repeated concerts in Germany (1819, 1824, 1827) and in London (1822, 1823, 1828), where he accompanied the Alsatian singer Madame Stockhausen on guitar in the Argyll Rooms in 1828 . In 1836 he also gave concerts in his homeland. In the same year his three-volume guitar school ( Méthode complète pour la guitare , Opus 59, and 25 Études mélodiques et progressives , Opus 60) came out in Paris . He died unexpectedly on January 16, 1853 of a brief violent illness.

During his time, many famous guitarists lived in Paris, such as the Italian Ferdinando Carulli (since 1806), who dedicated his opus 320 ( Six Andantes pour guitar ) to him in 1829 , the Spaniards Fernando Sor and Dionisio Aguado (both since 1826) and the French Napoléon Coste (since 1830).
