Charles Baker Adams

Charles Baker Adams (born January 11, 1814 in Dorchester , Massachusetts , † January 19, 1853 in Saint Thomas Parish , Jamaica ) was an American naturalist .

biography

After attending Amherst College , he studied at the Andover Seminary from 1834 to 1836 . He then took part in a geological survey of the cartography of New York under Edward Hitchcock . In 1837 he was himself a tutor at Amherst College before he was appointed professor of chemistry and natural history at Middlebury College in Vermont in 1838 .

Between 1844 and 1851 he made several research trips to Panama and the West Indies . He also worked as a geologist for the state of Vermont from 1845 to 1848 .

In 1847 Adams accepted a position as professor of astronomy and zoology at Amherst College. In 1849 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

In addition to his teaching and research activities, he was the author of numerous specialist articles and books, including:

  • Contributions to Conchology .
  • Stostomy.
  • Vitrinella.
