Christopher Aurivillius
Per Olof Christopher Aurivillius (born January 15, 1853 in the parish of Forsa in Hälsingland , † July 20, 1928 in Mörby ) was a Swedish entomologist .
Live and act
Aurivillus was born the son of a provost . He attended high school in Härnösand and then studied at the University of Uppsala , where he his doctorate in 1880 Ph. D. received. He then got a job in the entomological department of the Natural History Museum in Stockholm ( Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet ), where he became a professor in 1893. In the same year he was elected to the Agricultural Academy and shortly afterwards to the Royal Scientific Academy , of which he was secretary from 1901 to 1923.
Aurivillius gained national fame due to his research on butterflies , hymenoptera and beetles . He wrote papers on Swedish and African butterflies and wrote a treatise on Carl von Linné's importance for entomology. He also translated works by Alfred Brehm into Swedish. He was the initiator of the state entomological institute in the 1890s and participated in the multi-volume work Svensk insectsfauna (Swedish insect fauna). Aurivillius was also important as a teacher and was a member of the Stockholm Elementary Schools Commission .
He was married to Agnes Danielsdotter and had their son Magnus with her, who followed his father in the footsteps. Christopher's brother, Carl, was also regarded as a natural scientist.
