James Murray (General)

Sir James Murray , KCB (March 13, 1853 - October 17, 1919 ) was a British general and chief of the Imperial General Staff .

From 1898 to 1899, James Murray was Assistant Quartermaster General in the British Indian Army . From 1899 to 1900 he took part in the Second Boer War. Then he returned to British India . There he was in command of the 9th Division from 1907 to 1911. In 1912 he was sent to Russia by parliament . In 1913 Murray became Commander in Chief in Scotland and then South Africa.

On October 30, 1914, Murray became Chief of the Imperial General Staff. As Lieutenant General, he was the officer with the lowest rank who held this position. After the defeat in the Battle of Gallipoli , Murray was replaced by Archibald Murray . From May 1916 to September 1917 he was in command of the Eastern Command .
