Johann Joachim Wachsmann (born February 1, 1787 in Uthmöden near Calvörde , † July 25, 1853 in Barby ) was a German choir conductor and composer.

Life

Johann Joachim Peter Wachsmann was the son of the schoolmaster, sexton and cantor of the same name in Uthmöden and his wife Catharina Elisabeth born. Couple man from Satuelle . He attended school in Neuhaldensleben from 1800 to 1803, from 1803 to 1806 the high school in Salzwedel and from 1806 to 1810 the teachers' college connected to the Magdeburg Cathedral High School . He was a member of the choir at all schools, in Magdeburg he was prefect of the cathedral choir. Then he was tutored by Carl Friedrich Zelter in Berlin. Among the seven students of Zelters were, in addition to Wachsmann, Johann Gottfried Hientzsch (Breslau), August Wilhelm Bach (Berlin) and August Eduard Grell (Berlin).

In 1816 he received the “Concession for the creation of a singing school”, in 1817 he was appointed singing teacher at the teacher training college and in 1818 choir and music director at the cathedral and singing teacher at the cathedral grammar school. His first task was to re-establish the cathedral choir on January 1st, 1819. In 1821 and 1822 he was co-organizer and organizer of the music festivals in Magdeburg.

After the reorganization of the cathedral seminar into an independent teacher seminar in 1823, Wachsmann remained employed as a teacher for vocal music . His singing students included Louise Kayser, soloist at the Magdeburg Music Festival in 1821 and 1822 and Quedlinburg in 1824, and the voice coach and music researcher Gustav Wilhelm Teschner . The future mechanical engineering manufacturer Rudolf Wolf was also instructed by him. Wachsmann lived in an apartment, which was partly in the basement and partly below the classrooms of the Domgymnasium, in today's street Am Dom .

In 1825, Wachsmann played a key role in the preparation and implementation of the first Elbe Music Festival in Magdeburg. He headed the teachers' choir, which he co-founded in 1838, until 1848.

In 1847, Wachsmann belonged to the Magdeburg delegation at the first gathering of German musicians and music lovers in Leipzig. Due to illness, he had to apply for retirement shortly before his death.

The Allgemeine Musikalische Zeitung wrote in 1837: " He is a thinking, educated musician to whom Magdeburg owes its first upswing in music ."

Works

Wachsmann composed songs, sacred and secular chants, choir motets for mixed and male choirs and published choral collections, school song books, textbooks and song collections for singing lessons, primers and school song books. His canon " Wake up, wake up, the rooster crowed " is known to the present day .
