Ernst Wedge
Ernst Keil (born December 6, 1816 in Langensalza , † March 23, 1878 in Leipzig ) was a German bookseller , publisher, among other things the editor and founder of the family magazine Die Gartenlaube .
Life
Ernst Keil was born on Marktstrasse in Langensalza as the son of a court clerk. He learned the book trade in Weimar , then joined the Weygandsche Buchhandlung in Leipzig as an assistant in 1837 and soon turned to journalism here. In 1838 he took over the editing of the journal Our Planet (later Wandelstern ), which under his direction became one of the most widely read papers of the time. After he had founded his own bookseller's shop in Leipzig in 1845, a year later he started the monthly newspaper Der Leuchtthurm , which he also edited himself. This organ marked a significant turning point in the history of pre-March journalism when, supported by respected representatives of the liberal movement ( Robert Blum , Johann Jacoby , Gustav Adolf Wislicenus , Leberecht Uhlich and others), it was the first popular expression of the awakened urge for liberation on political and religious area. Ceaseless persecution on the part of the police forced frequent changes of the publishing location until the March days of 1848 finally brought freedom of the press and the paper itself was allowed to appear in Leipzig. With the victory of the reaction, the persecutions began again; the magazine was suppressed in 1851 and the socially critical wedge himself was sentenced to nine months in prison , which he served in Hubertusburg .
In prison, the idea for an illustrated family paper was born, which appeared from January 1, 1853 under the title Die Gartenlaube and which quickly became popular.
Ernst Keil married Lina (Dorothea Karoline, née Aston, 1821–1894) in 1844. Their son Alfred died in Cairo in 1871 on a trip to the Orient.
estate
Among his other publishing works, which in 1850/1852 also included the hydrological works by JH Rausse and Theodor Hahn , the most successful were Carl Ernst Bock's book on healthy and sick people (1855) and the novels by E. Marlitt and E. Werner . The business, which passed into the possession of the widow Keils, was taken over by the Kröner brothers in Stuttgart at the end of 1883 and continued under the Ernst Keils successor company .
