Georg Schuppener

Georg Schuppener (* 1968 in Aachen ) is a German linguist , natural science historian and a PhD mathematician. In the course of his career he has held various teaching positions at universities in Germany, the Czech Republic , Russia and Slovakia . Since 2011 he has been a professor in Ústí nad Labem .

Schuppener is considered an extremely interdisciplinary scientist who forges connections between linguistics, the history of natural sciences, politics and sociology, which is not least due to his own varied university education. His research focuses on the history of language ( language change and language variation), sociolinguistics, mythological literature, and the history of mathematics and folklore.

Life

education

Between 1988 and 1996 he studied German language and literature , history , mathematics , philosophy of science and Arabic language at the RWTH Aachen , the University of Leipzig , the University of Jena , the University of Hamburg as well as in Tunis . In 1993, he put in Aachen his diploma in mathematics, and in 1995 he was in Leipzig with the dissertation Germanic numerals - Language and cultural-historical studies in particular with number 12 for Dr. phil. PhD . 1999 followed in Hamburg with Jesuit mathematics in Prague in the 16th and 17th centuries (1556-1654) the doctorate to Dr. rer. nat.

Schuppener completed his habilitation in 2001 with the book Making things tangible. Language and cultural history of the German Maßbegriffe and received in 2002 the instructor as a lecturer for German Linguistics .

Research and teaching activities

Following his first doctorate, Schuppener became a research assistant at the Institute for German Studies at the University of Leipzig in 1996 and remained so until 2003. During this time, he worked as a lecturer at the Charles University in Prague in 1997 and 1998 and held the same function at the Friedrich in 1999 and 2000 -Schiller University Jena. After completing his academic work in Leipzig, he was a lecturer at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg between 2003 and 2008 , but was also appointed adjunct professor for language development at the University of Leipzig in 2006. Between 2007 and 2010 he was also teaching at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen .

In 2010 Schuppener moved to the University of Erfurt as an academic senior counselor and adjunct professor for German linguistics , where he stayed until 2014. He also held a visiting professorship in Kaliningrad and is a professor of German studies at the St. Kyrill and St. Method University in Trnava . Since 2011 he has held the chair for German studies at the Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem as a professor .

Memberships

Georg Schuppener is a member of the Gotha Research Center of the University of Erfurt and of the Research Center for German in Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe (DiMOS) of the University of Regensburg , a founding member and former chairman of the Friends of the Gotha Research Library and former deputy chairman of the Working Group for Comparative Mythology in Leipzig. In addition, he is represented on the editorial boards of various East-Central European journals and series : Aussiger Posts ( Ústí nad Labem ), Orbis Linquarum ( Breslau ), Slovak Journal for German Studies ( Trnava ), Germanica Wratislaviensia (Breslau), Linguistic Meeting in Wrocław (Breslau), Breslau studies in media linguistics (Breslau) and online linguistics (Breslau).

Between 1994 and 2001 he was also part of the editorial team of hochschule ost - Leipzig contributions to university and science (until 1998: hochschule ost - political-academic journal from East Germany ) ( Leipzig ), before the journal was transferred to the Martin Luther University in Halle- Wittenberg was relocated.

In October 2012 the Executive Agency for Research appointed Schuppener as an expert and reviewer within the framework of the 7th Framework Program for Research of the European Union . His tasks included the appraisal and evaluation of applications from a wide range of subjects in English, French and German.
