Johannes Cornelis de Jonge (born May 9, 1793 in Zierikzee , Zeeland , † June 11, 1853 in Zuidhoorn , Rijswijk ) was a Dutch historian and archivist .

Life

De Jonge was born in an old patrician family Zeeland (his ancestor Boniface de Jonge was 1615-1625 Pensionary been of Zeeland), which is why he and his family the aristocratic title Jonkheer received when King I. Willem 1814, the Dutch aristocracy restored. He was the son of Willem Adriaan de Jonge van Campens Nieuwland and Cornelia Petronella Mogge Pous. He was interested in history from a young age and was instrumental in saving a number of medieval documents from auctioning off by the French authorities in his hometown of Zierikzee in 1810. This brought him into contact with Hendrik van Wijn , the first archivist of the Batavian Republic , who also became the first Rijksarchivaris (Reich archivist) in the new Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1814 and who appointed de Jonge as his deputy in the same year. Meanwhile, de Jonge continued his studies of law and history at the University of Leiden . As a member of a student militia, he took part in the Dutch Army's Waterloo Campaign. After his return to Leiden he received his doctorate in 1816 with the thesis Diplomata quaedam Hollandica et Zelandica partim inedita partim emendata animadversionibus illustrata . In the same year he married Henrietta Philippina Jacoba van Kretschmar, with whom he had five children. One of his children was Johan Karel Jakob de Jonge . Johannes Cornelis de Jonge died in 1853 after a stroke.

Act

In 1814 he was appointed deputy head of the Dutch Imperial Archives . In 1816 he was also appointed head of the Royal Coin Cabinet in The Hague . In both functions he promoted the accessibility of the collections by publishing catalogs. He wrote historical treatises and published facsimiles of historical documents. In 1825 he became a member of The Hague City Council. In 1831, after the death of his mentor Van Wijn, he was appointed Reich archivist himself. In the following years he wrote his great work on the history of the Dutch navy. In 1844 he was elected Wethouder (roughly equivalent to a German alderman ) of the city of The Hague, which he remained until his death. Between 1840 and 1851 he was also a member of the Provinciale Staten of the Province of South Holland .
