Leo Anton Carl de Ball
Leo Anton Carl de Ball (born November 23, 1853 in Lobberich , † December 12, 1916 in Vienna ) was a German astronomer .
Life
De Ball studied at the universities of Berlin and Bonn . In 1878 he became an assistant at the Gotha observatory . Here he worked under the direction of Adalbert Krueger as an observer on various instruments. He published his results in numerous publications. After Krueger left Gotha, he was appointed caretaker of the observatory. In 1881 he moved to the Bothkamp observatory near Kiel , which at the time owned the largest telescope in Germany. He eventually headed this private observatory of Chamberlain von Bülow as director. On September 3, 1882, von Bothkamp discovered Athamantis from the asteroids (230) .
In 1883 de Ball went to Belgium and worked at the Liège and Uccle observatories . From 1891 he was director of the private but highly recognized Kuffner observatory in Vienna. In 1895 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .
De Ball published works on the proper motion of the solar system and on spherical astronomy . He also created precise tables on astronomical refraction , the refraction of light from celestial bodies by the earth's atmosphere.
