John Henry Twachtman (born August 4, 1853 in Cincinnati , † August 8, 1902 in Gloucester , Massachusetts ) was an American painter and etcher of impressionism , especially landscape paintings .

He received his first instruction from Frank Duveneck . From 1875 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Ludwig von Löfftz and in Paris ( Académie Julian 1883 to 1885). Twachtman was a member of the Ten American Painters . In 1886 he returned to the United States. In 1898 he was elected to the National Institute of Arts and Letters .
