Ten American Painters
The Ten American Painters (also known as The Ten for short ) were painters who resigned from the Society of American Artists in protest at the end of 1897 and beginning of 1898 in protest at the ruling art scene.
All ten artists were influenced by French Impressionism and each developed this style individually. They did not live and work as a "school" or an artists' colony , but rather as cooperating individuals between New York and Boston , Massachusetts .
When the group of artists was formed , painters Abbott Thayer and Winslow Homer were also invited to join, but both refused. When the painter John Henry Twachtman died in 1902 , William Merritt Chase was elected as his successor by the group .
