Eduard Franz Ludwig Kullmann (born July 14, 1853 in Magdeburg - Neustadt , † March 16, 1892 in Amberg ) was a German craftsman and was known as the Bismarck assassin in 1874.

Life

Eduard Kullmann was the son of an outpatient fishmonger who had moved from Catholic Eichsfeld to Magdeburg- Alte Neustadt . The 20-year-old Böttcher journeyman Kullmann, a member of the Catholic journeyman's association in Salzwedel , committed an attack on the then Chancellor Otto von Bismarck in Kissingen in the midst of a cheering crowd on July 13, 1874 . Bismarck suffered only a light gunshot wound in the hand. The opera singer José Lederer , who was standing nearby, seized the assassin.

The motive of the Catholic assassin was to murder Bismarck as the originator of the Kulturkampf . The Kulturkampf was a conflict between the Catholic Church under Pope Pius IX. and the Kingdom of Prussia and the German Empire under Bismarck between 1871 and 1887.

Kullmann was sentenced to 14 years in prison and again to seven years in prison for insubordination before this sentence expired. In 1888 he was transferred from the St. Georgen workhouse in Bayreuth to the Amberg prison , where he died lonely and forgotten of a lung disease.

Aloys Hennes composed the march “Bismarck Hoch” and Johann Valentin Hamm the “Bismarck-Rettungs-Jubel-Marsch” in memory of the failed assassination attempt.
