Victor Segalen

Victor Segalen , actually Joseph Ambroise Désiré Ségalen (born January 14, 1878 in Brest , Finistère department , † May 21, 1919 in Huelgoat , Finistère department), was a French writer , marine doctor , ethnologist and archaeologist .

Life

Victor Segalen studied medicine in Bordeaux . He toured French Polynesia (1903–1905) and China (1909–1914 and 1917). During a stay in the Marquesas Islands in 1903, he bought the last sketches by Paul Gauguin , who had died a few months before his arrival and which would otherwise have been destroyed. Exhausted from illness, he died in an accident in the forest of Huelgoat ( Brittany ). The Université Bordeaux II was named in his honor .
