The Kölner Schull- un Veedelszöch traditionally pull through the center of Cologne and Vringsveedel on Carnival Sunday .

The first Veedelszog took place on Carnival Sunday 1933, after a citizens' committee had launched this idea a year earlier and committed to maintaining and renewing the original People's Carnival. The aim was "to turn the people from spectators into players again and to open up new, healthy sources for the festival," said the then chairman of the Heimatverein Alt-Köln and member of the citizens' committee, Joseph Klersch. The two trains have been running together since 1952.

They combine two events:

  • the Schullzöch (school trains), in which up to 50 Cologne schools participate,
  • the Veedelszöch (district or district trains ), contested by over forty regulars, neighborhood and district clubs and "large families" (who compete in over a hundred men).

They draw one after the other in this order. There is a 40-person jury that awards prizes to the best group in the categories of carriage group and foot group. In addition, the leader of the Rose Monday procession can award an originality prize.

These three groups are allowed to take part in the Rose Monday procession. The throwing material for the Rose Monday procession is donated to them by the Association of Friends and Patrons of Cologne Customs, which, in addition to the top of the city of Cologne such as the Lord Mayor and representatives of the media, make up around two thirds of the jury. The representatives of this association send other members to the jury every year in a rotation process. The schools are not rated by the jury in order not to expose them to public pressure to perform.

Participation in the trains is very popular, there are around 25 groups on the waiting list who cannot participate because the total length of the trains and their duration are limited. The Schull- un Veedelszöch are also enjoying a lot of attention from the Cologne media: like the Rose Monday procession, they are also broadcast live by WDR television and Radio Cologne 107.1 . Not to be confused with the Schull and Veedelszöch on Carnival Sunday in the city center with the carnival parades in the Veedeln , which take place from Saturday to Tuesday.

In 2020 the Schull- and Veedelszöch were canceled at short notice due to the storm Yulia.
