Radio Köln is a Cologne local radio station with a full program belonging to private broadcasting . Since the beginning of 2014, the station has been based in Schanzenstrasse 28 in Cologne-Mülheim. The station previously produced from the studios in Cologne's MediaPark. The radio station received the broadcasting license in May 1991.

Legal basis

The original broadcasting law for the state of North Rhine-Westphalia of December 19, 1986 was replaced on July 2, 2002 by the state media law of North Rhine-Westphalia (LMG). It provides for a "two-pillar model" for private radio, according to which two independent forms of organization must be set up at the same time in order to be granted a license ("broadcast license"). According to Section 52 (1) LMG, an organizing association must use an operating company:

  • the organizing community is a non-profit association in which all socially relevant local groups are represented. A maximum of 22 people are allowed, at Radio Cologne there are 18. She is responsible for programming;
  • the operating company in a private legal form assumes responsibility for finances and technology. Up to 75% of the local newspaper publishers (§ 59 Paragraph 3 LMG) and 25% the local community (§ 59 Paragraph 5 LMG) are involved.

program

Radio Köln broadcasts a full program, so it serves all target groups with all program content. In 2012 the company achieved sales of EUR 4.777 million (2011: EUR 5.372 million), the profit slumped to EUR 0.695 million (2011: EUR 1.221 million). The decline in sales and profits is mainly due to the significantly lower sales commissions of the non-film program supplier Radio NRW, because the range “listeners yesterday Monday to Friday 14+” fell from 27.8% (March 2011) to 18.2% (March 2012) . The limited partnership capital amounted to 511,000 euros and is 75% owned by RRB Rheinische Rundfunkbeteiligungsges. mbH & Co. KG , Cologne, (DuMont) and 25% owned by Stadtwerke Köln.
