Reiner Heugabel (born February 5, 1963 in Monheim am Rhein ) is a former German wrestler . He was the 1991 European Free Style Paper Weight Champion .

Career

Reiner Heugabel grew up in Mömbris and began wrestling as a teenager at KSC Germania Mömbris . From 1980 he started in the second division team of RWG Mömbris-Königshofen . In 1980 he became German champion for the first time. He then moved to AC Bavaria Goldbach. The only 1.47 m tall athlete started his entire career, which lasted almost 20 years, always in paper weight (at that time up to 48 kg body weight). He was a locksmith by trade, but joined the armed forces at a young age and became a professional soldier.

Reiner Heugabel, who competed exclusively in free style at championships, was already very successful in the youth field. He was once German youth champion and three times German junior champion. He also achieved success on an international level in the junior division: For example, he took 5th place at the 1980 European Junior Championships (Cadets = up to the age of 18) in Bursa and was in 1983 at the 1983 Junior World Championship (Espoirs = up to 20 years old ) in Los Angeles vice world champion behind the Soviet athlete Igor Perwochuk. In the team he was also extremely successful in the Greco. He outclassed the Olympic runner-up and European champion Markus Scherer, who was a pure classic, several times.

In 1980 Reiner Heugabel won his first German senior title in Hof / Saale at the age of 17 . From 1982 to 1996 he won the German paper weight championships fifteen times in a row. An achievement that was only exceeded by Wilfried Dietrich . Until 1980 he went to the mat for his home club RWG. From 1981 to 1989 he competed for Goldbach. Here he was decisively shaped by coach Jürgen Barleben. From 1990 to 1995 he went back to Mömbris to fight for Goldbach again from 1995.

Reiner Heugabel started his international senior career in 1984. He finished 4th at the European Championships in Jönköping that year , and in the battle for the bronze medal against the Bulgarian Adem Hassanow after a turbulent fight with just 9: 12 points lost. At the Olympic Games in Los Angeles this year , Reiner Heugabel failed in the fight for the medals against the Chinese Gao Wenhe and the American Robert Weaver , but finished in an honorable fifth place.

In the years from 1985 to 1995 Reiner Heugabel fought for medals at the European Championships year after year and also achieved excellent positions in several World Championships and the Olympic Games in 1988 and 1992. He defeated world class wrestlers such as Majid Torkan from Iran , Alin Pacurariu from Romania , Timothy Vanni from the USA , Sergei Karamtschakow from the USSR , Romica Rasovan from Romania, Mario Willomeit from the GDR , Marian Nedkow from Bulgaria, Ragim Mamedow from the USSR, who he finished with 15-0 points at the 1990 European Championships in Poznań, Ilyas Şükrüoğlu from Turkey , Peter Umaschow from the USSR, Peter Iwonschanow from the USSR, Stanilaw Marius Szostecki from Poland , Laszlo Olvari from Hungary , Aldo Martínez from Cuba Wugar Orudschow from the USSR, Nasser Zainalnia from Iran, Wiktor Railean from Moldova , Jan Falandys from Poland and others. v. a.

He won his first medal at an international championship in 1986 at the European Championships in Athens . There he only lost in the final against the Soviet athlete Alexander Dorschow and thus became vice European champion. His next medal was won in 1989 at the European Championships in Ankara , where he finished third. Reiner Heugabel achieved the same result at the European Championships in Poznań in 1990 and in Kaposvár in 1992 . In between was his greatest success in 1991, namely winning the title at the European Championships in Stuttgart . At this European championship he defeated Ilyas Şükrüoğlu, Romica Rasovan, Stanislaw Szostecki and the multiple world champion Wugar Orudschow and won the European title.

He won his last medal at the European Championships in Rome in 1994 , where he was only defeated in the final by the Armenian Armen Mkrtchyan and became vice European champion again.

At world championships, Reiner Heugabel narrowly missed the medal ranks with four fourth, one fifth and one sixth place. At the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988 Reiner Heugabel scored six victories and had to be satisfied with 5th place after only one defeat against Iwan Tzonow from Bulgaria. At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona , he reached 6th place.

Reiner Heugabel showed consistent performance for over 15 years and competed for international medals. His weakness in the first fights at championships prevented an even better success rate. He often lost the first fight, even against opponents whom he had defeated several times before.
