Dialect and linguistic features

The Hoferisch ( Huuferisch (emphasis on the long u )), the Hofer dialect, belongs to the Upper Franconian dialects in the dialect group of the East Franconian dialects . These dialects are called Franconian . A special feature in Hof and the immediate vicinity is the word hoa ( o and a are spoken together as a medium-length vowel between o and a , a phon not used in High German ), which dialect speakers use as a synonym for Ja or as an affirmative Modal particle is used and the dialect speaker can also be recognized outside of the Hof area to other Hofers. Texts in the Hofer dialect are published in the Hofer Walker , a column in the local daily newspaper Frankenpost , and show the phonetic relationship with the dialects of the Egerland and the neighboring former Ascher Ländchen as a common legacy from the time of the Northern Gau .

Due to the proximity to the Vogtland , variations of East Franconian ( Upper German ), such as Vogtland , can also be heard.

history

Early history

St. Lorenz Church , mother church of Upper Franconia

Hof was first mentioned as "Curia Variscorum" in the 4th century. Bavarian Slavs settled in the region . The history of the Eastern Franconia , which is documented by documentary sources, begins after the Migration Period . From these sources, the events of that time in the area to which today's Upper Palatinate, Lower, Middle and Upper Franconia belong, can be roughly traced. The Nordgau developed in the area called "Francōnia orientālis" north of the Danube and the Castra Regina up to the Main and extended to the east in the Bohemian Forest . One of the old tribes known by name that settled there were the Varisker , who, according to the Tabula Peutingeriana , were resident in what is now northeastern Bavaria and Thuringia.

middle Ages

In the early Middle Ages, the dioceses of Naumburg , Regensburg and Würzburg met in the area of the city of Hof . Charlemagne had told the Würzburg bishops, "to build on the territory of the Slavs who settled between the rivers Main and Rednitz churches." With territorial reorganization was at the request of King Henry II. In November 1007, the Diocese of Bamberg , which directly Rome was assumed. In the north-east of the new diocese, the grand parish of Hof was founded, which encompassed the entire area of today's district of Hof . The first church was built on the site of today's Lorenz Church.

Andechs and Weida

Michaeliskirche, Ludwigstrasse and town hall

Around the year 1080 there was a settlement of farmers with the place name "Rekkenze" in what is today the city area, probably a result of the location on the Regnitz river . The first settlement houses stood near the confluence with the Saale . They were mentioned in a document in 1214, extended to the adjacent hill and formed the so-called old town in the later city of Hof. This document also names the Lorenz Church, the oldest church in Hof.

Around 1230, under the government of Otto I von Andechs, a new city was built north of the farming settlement, fortified with walls and gates - the so-called Neustadt. The main road through the Neustadt - today's Ludwigstraße - was an important road connection to the Vogtland . Towards the end of the 13th century, two monasteries can be found in the new town , the Franciscan monastery was built in 1292. Until 1373, Hof was in the possession of the Bailiffs von Weida and passed from them to the property of the Burgraves of Nuremberg from the Hohenzollern family . According to data from the Society for Leprosy in Hof, a medieval leprosy can be identified from 1302 , which was 700 meters "in front of the lower stone bridge".

Brandenburg-Bayreuth (1373–1792)

Coat of arms of the Margraves of Brandenburg-Bayreuth in Hofer Ludwigstrasse

The city became part of the Hohenzollern Margraviate of Brandenburg-Kulmbach as the Landeshauptmannschaft Hof . After the residence city was moved, the principality was called the Markgraftum Brandenburg-Bayreuth . During this time the city was referred to as the "Prince of Brandenburg Capital Hoff in Voigtlande". A Hussite army group captured the city in 1430 and destroyed it badly. In order to be better protected against attacks, a rifle guild was founded in 1432. A folk festival, the so-called Schlappentag, developed from the guild's annual target practice .

In 1529 at the beginning of the Reformation , Hof became Evangelical Lutheran. Margrave Albrecht Alcibiades von Brandenburg-Kulmbach founded the Hofer Gymnasium in 1546 , today's Jean-Paul-Gymnasium , one of the oldest high schools in Upper Franconia.

In 1553, Hof was besieged and taken during the Second Margrave War by Nuremberg and royal Bohemian troops under Heinrich IV von Plauen (see Siege of Hof ). Georg Wolf von Kotzau was briefly governor of Hof. In 1553, Hans Glaser made a woodcut of the siege of the city.

In 1557 the first printing press was founded in Hof.

Location on Via Imperii

Location of the city on Via Imperii

Hof also gained economic importance in the Middle Ages due to its location on the Via Imperii . This enabled the trading city to prosper even then.

17th and 18th centuries

In 1625 the city burned for the fourth time. In 1632 Wallenstein's General Holck came to Hof, and in the same year Wallenstein moved through the city with his main army.

Holk after 1632

When eleven years after the end of the war they had recovered from the horrors and destruction of the Thirty Years' War , the damage caused by the fire of 1625 was repaired. The town hall was rebuilt.

After the Thirty Years' War Hof became a place of refuge for evicted Protestants, especially from Austria and Bohemia . The first postal connection had been there since 1683 twice a week from Leipzig via Hof to Nuremberg . Further postal connections to Regensburg (1692) and Dresden (1693) followed. In 1690 there was another big fire in the city.

In the 18th century, two city fires raged again. In 1743 the Hof castle burned down. At this time it was the seat of the administrator of the provincial governorate Hof appointed by the Margrave of Brandenburg-Bayreuth and was not rebuilt.

In 1783 the city's first newspaper appeared; the Höfer intelligence paper is considered the forerunner of today's newspaper.

In 1792 Hof came to the Kingdom of Prussia with the Margraviate of Brandenburg-Bayreuth .

19th century

The affiliation to Prussia did not last long. In 1806 French troops occupied the city. In 1810 France sold the Principality of Bayreuth with the city of Hof to the Kingdom of Bavaria .

Bavaria after Napoleon

On September 4, 1823, a devastating fire destroyed most of the Neustadt with today's Ludwigstrasse and the surrounding streets. Until New Year's Eve 1869, Hof had a night watchman, who ensured the protection and safety of the citizens at night through tours and signals.

industrialization

Seal of the city of Hof (1850–1923)

In 1848 at the time of the peasant liberation , Hof was connected to the Bavarian Ludwig-Süd-Nord-Bahn and the Saxon-Bavarian Railway . The first Hof train station , a terminal station , was near the Upper Gate at the site of today's city post office. The passenger trains stopped in a four-track, brick-built platform hall, which has largely been preserved.

old trainstation

In 1880, one kilometer from the city gates, the new Hofer Hauptbahnhof was built as a through station on the border between Bavaria and Saxony with considerable technical facilities. It was built due to the growing volume of traffic. The city grew so rapidly that the population quintupled between 1850 and 1900. The main reason for this lies in the growing textile industry . New living space, which was needed for the workers, was quickly built, and many Wilhelminian-style districts emerged , such as the Bahnhofsviertel , Westend , the factory suburbs and large parts of the Münsterviertel , the Studentenberg , Hofeck and Moschendorf .

At the end of the 19th century, the old town was largely rebuilt and now looks newer than the new town.

City Church of St. Mary

Marienkirche under construction around 1870

The Marienkirche was built from 1864 to 1891. It was created at the Sonnenplatz, on the ground of the pilgrims' hostel Zur Goldenen Sonne from the Middle Ages . The Catholic Church was urgently needed, as many royal Bavarian officials and workers who came to the city from Bohemia and the western Franconian Forest were Catholics and the small Catholic Church on Karolinenstrasse was no longer sufficient. The St. Nicholas Church, which was abandoned as a church in 1542 , already stood near the Marienkirche in the Middle Ages .

The Jewish community

Memorial plaque on Hallplatz

The first mention of Jews in Hof dates back to 1319 and as early as 1373 a synagogue called " Judenschul " was built. 100 years later there were at least five Jewish families in the city who lived mainly from the money trade. This ended abruptly after a pogrom in 1515 after the Jewish families refused to pay the Good Friday levy imposed on them as " atonement for the killing of Christ ". The surviving Jews left the city. After various settlement bans that were still in place until the 18th century, at the end of the 19th century, during the time of Jewish emancipation , Jewish families again settled in the city. They formed a new Jewish community that grew to almost 100 people in the following decades. In 1911 the Jewish cemetery was built in Wölbattendorf and in 1927 another synagogue was built on Hallplatz near the old train station, although it was the target of attacks in the following years. This church was completely destroyed in the November pogrom in 1938 ; the inventory was burned.

The pogroms in Hof, which began in the early morning hours of November 10th, mainly involved officers from the Hof Police Directorate , the General SS and SA men . In addition to the synagogue, retailers and private homes were the main targets of the attacks; 12 of the 80 Jews in Hof at that time were arrested. Most of the Jews left the city again, so that in 1939 only seven Jewish residents were counted. After the Second World War , no former Hofer Jew returned, but about 1400 Jews were stranded in Hof due to expulsion ( reception camp in Moschendorf ). After Israel was founded, only a small community of 40 to 50 people remained, which grew to around 400 in the 1990s due to the influx of Jewish quota refugees from the former USSR . After several interim solutions in the old Federal Republic, a former school building in Moschendorf was acquired as a community center in 1997 and inaugurated as a new synagogue in 1998. Since 1999 the congregation has had its own rabbi, David Goldberg.

Since 1983 a memorial plaque on the site of the old synagogue has been commemorating the Jewish community at the time and the persecution of the Jewish inhabitants in the Shoah .

20th century

Railcars 1, 6 and 2 in front of the depot at Oberen Anger, around 1905

From 1901 to the beginning of the 1920s, the Hof tram ran between the city and the main train station and was later replaced by city buses .

After the First World War , development weakened, but the employment figures were still very high. The upward trend was finally weakened further by the global economic crisis . In addition, the textile industry generally stopped growing.

In the years 1914-1915 the Bismarck Tower was built on the Rosenbühl (597 m above sea level ).

Second World War

From September 3, 1944 to April 14, 1945, before the end of the Second World War, there was a satellite camp of the Flossenbürg concentration camp , the Moschendorf camp , in Hof- Moschendorf , whose 100 prisoners had to do forced labor for the SS main witness office .

On February 14, 1945, 12 American "flying fortresses" attacked B-17 factory suburbs with 27.5 tons of bombs. On April 8, a heavy US attack with 101 B-17s and 281 tons of bombs followed on the station district. 280 civilians were killed in the bombing, 100 houses were destroyed and 150 were severely to moderately damaged.

Post-war period (1945–1989)

US Army troops occupied the city on April 15, 1945 on their advance to Eger and western Bohemia . Farm belonged to the entry into force of the Germany treaty in 1955 to the American occupation zone . Due to the territorial division of the former German Reich after the Second World War and the Iron Curtain , Hof was geographically in an extreme peripheral location ( zone border area ). The connections to the north and east, to Thuringia , Saxony and Bohemia were interrupted. In the district of Moschendorf , after the end of the war from 1945 to 1962, the Moschendorf reception camp was set up as the first refuge for displaced persons , especially for people from neighboring Egerland . The population of Hof and the surrounding area grew significantly as a result. New housing estates were built in the courtyard and the surrounding area and new companies were founded.

Several large buildings were built in Hof in the second half of the 20th century, such as the Kaufhof building, the Gotha high-rise and the justice building.

From 1948 to 1993 the RIAS transmitter Hof was operated on the raised barracks area on the western edge of the city. The barracks was also the location of the German Armed Forces with accommodations for the US Army to observe border activities around the border triangle .

A special feature was the border post office Hof of the Deutsche Bundespost during the German division. It was open around the clock. In 1810 the forerunner was created by merging the Royal Bavarian Post Office with the Saxon Border Post Office, was dissolved after 1871 to 1945 and was reactivated and relocated after the war in a new building next to the main train station, at Bahnhofsplatz 2. It existed until around 1990.

The Hof vocational school was opened in 1960, followed ten years later by the technical college . The court-Pirk Airport was inaugurated in the year 1969th Before that, there had been an airfield on the Hohe Saas since the 1920s . There were three major events in 1971. So the barracks were put into operation and Hof became the armed forces base , the observatory opened in Krötenbruck and a new educational institution was created with the specialist academy for social education.

In 1945 Hof received a symphony orchestra, the Hof Symphony Orchestra . In 1974 the culture was further strengthened by the opening of the new Freiheitshalle in place of the old festival hall from 1935. The name is intended to remind of the liberation from the National Socialist dictatorship . Renovated between 2009 and 2012, it now offers space for 6,000 people. The next major project came only two years later: the city council decided to build the Untreusee . This was inaugurated in 1981 as a recreational area close to the city.

In 1973 the town twinning with the French Villeneuve la Garenne near Paris was decided.

In 1974 the Bavarian Vogtland Museum was reopened in its new building. The museum has existed since 1908.

The old town and Lorenzstrasse have been pedestrian zones since 1986 .

In 1987 the cities of Hof and Plauen entered into a partnership. What was special about it was that Hof was in the Federal Republic of Germany and Plauen in the GDR , with the cities only 30 kilometers apart and having a close common history.

Border opening in 1989

The events of 1989 in the GDR particularly affected Hof due to its location near the border with Thuringia and Saxony. In the autumn of 1989, 13,600 GDR refugees came first. a. from the Prague embassy, in 14 special trains via Prague and Dresden to Hof. Citizens, volunteers and civil servants all provided enormous help. On October 1, 1989, at 6:14 a.m., the first train from Prague via Dresden, Freiberg , Karl-Marx-Stadt and Plauen arrived in Hof, after having passed the nearby Gutenfürst border station. The actual opening of the border on November 9, 1989 posed enormous challenges for the city and its citizens and caused great traffic chaos. After the opening of the border, 330,000 visitors came to the city in over 90,000 cars within three days to look and to receive the welcome money . In November and December 1989 up to 40,000 travelers arrived at Hof Central Station every day. By December 31, 1989, 20 paying offices (including the post offices) in Hof-Stadt had paid over DM 91 million in welcome money.

State Parliament President Ilse Aigner stated in 2019: "It is unique how the feeling of togetherness between West and East was expressed in Hof in autumn 1989."

Reunification in 1990 and subsequent years

After the opening of the border to Bohemia in 1989 and German reunification in 1990, old traffic connections were restored in a modified form.

In 1991 the foundation stone of the new theater was laid . It opened in 1994 with a performance by Don Giovanni . In 1995 the Bavarian Theater Days took place in Hof.

In 1994 Hof hosted the Bavarian State Garden Show . Among other things, the Theresienstein and the Saaleauen were included . In the same year the University of Applied Sciences started teaching. It was already the second university in the city.

In May 1998 the new synagogue of the Israelite religious community in Hof was inaugurated.

21st century

Hof's location in the northeast of Upper Franconia near Thuringia and Saxony required urgent motorway construction: planned from 1992 and expanded between 1996 and 2000, the A 9, the A 72 were extended and the A 93 was rebuilt. On December 15, 2000, the motorway bypass on the A 93 with the Hochfranken motorway triangle was put into operation. This made Hof the junction of a north-south and an east-west axis.

In 2003 the groundbreaking ceremony for the Hof-Gattendorf automotive supplier park took place.

Place name

The town, which was laid out north of an existing farming settlement around 1230, was initially given names by the population such as “Regnitzhof” or “Hof Regnitz”, which were later shortened to “am Hof” or “zum Hof” and finally to “Hof”. In Hof, the medieval town with its walls and gates is called the new town , the older rural settlement outside the gates is called the old town . Other common names were Hof im Vogtlande (in the 18th century) and Hof in Bavaria (in the 19th century).

To distinguish it from other places with the name “Hof” , formulations with geographical additions such as “Hof an der Saale” (or “Hof / Saale”) or Hof in Bavaria are used. The city on the Saale is often mentioned in media reports.

Perception of the city

  • Margravine Wilhelmine von Bayreuth spoke in the middle of the 18th century about the Hofer nobility at the time, from whom she could not win anything at all: “Her coarse manners were in perfect harmony with her appearance; you could have taken them for peasants. "
  • Jean Paul attended high school in Hof and spent a few years in the city. In The Invisible Lodge he had taken the supposed disregard of the Hofer for his work as an issue. At first he had said about the city it was “without taste and without patriotism and without reading”, later he was forgiving and wrote that in Hof he had suffered the worst, but wrote the best.
  • Johann Wolfgang von Goethe stopped in Hof several times on his travels to the Bohemian spa triangle . In 1812 he wrote to his wife about Hof: “Nice location of the Gasthof zum Hirsch in front of the Oberthor, great liveliness, pretty girls, lively children, a lot of mobility. Not to forget the many trucks that, heavily loaded, partly came towards us, partly drove past us in Hof. Countless children's carriages. Quite benevolence. "
  • The film critic Hanns-Georg Rodek commented on the Hofer Filmtage : "Hof is still the showcase of German cinema after the Berlinale, but before Munich."

coat of arms

Coat of arms of the independent city of Hof
Blazon : “In red, two black jointed silver tin towers with pointed roofsgrowing from a common base. At the bottom a black sign with a silver border with a red-tongued, red-armored and red-crowned golden lion. "
Justification for the coat of arms: The towers connected below are based on the formerly fortified Neustadt in Hof an der Saale, which has had the characteristics of a town since the middle of the 13th century. The lion is borrowed from the coat of arms of the Vögte von Weida and the coat of arms of the later House of Wittelsbach . After changes to the coat of arms over the centuries, King Ludwig I confirmed the coloring and today's coat of arms with a depiction of the towers from 1571 on request.

For a city flag with a coat of arms, the administration of the city of Hof was approved by the responsible ministry in Munich to display the coat of arms from 1840.

Older versions of the coat of arms show an angel between the towers and a wild man next to the towers . The two towers are partly labeled A and N. The letters stand for A ntiqua civitas and N ova civitas, so for Hofer A ltstadt and the N eustadt.

City coats of arms can be found today in the cityscape in the following places:

  • at the town hall, side to Ludwigstrasse,
  • at the organ loft in the Protestant town church St. Michaelis,
  • at the gym of the old town school at the corner of Marienstraße / Luitpoldstraße,

Hof is an organically grown city. Despite the destruction in the Bahnhofsviertel and the factory suburbs during the Second World War, the inner city remained relatively undamaged. The Hofer center is in the list of 300 most significant historic town centers in Germany of the time included magazine,. A medieval street market (old town) was joined by a late medieval founding town (Neustadt with Ludwigstrasse). This had a planned floor plan and was rebuilt in Biedermeier style after a serious fire in 1823 . The result is an important, closed Biedermeier town of art-historical importance, which has been almost completely preserved.

At the end of the 19th century, in the course of industrialization, a large Wilhelminian-style district was created around Marienstrasse and Bahnhofstrasse as well as the Theresienstein public park with the Art Nouveau farm building in a country house ambience and the artificial ruin with the 16 m high observation tower on the Labyrinthberg.

Other structural dominants in the cityscape are the town hall with its octagonal tower that can be climbed, the watch tower as part of an alarm system in the late Middle Ages , the boarding hall of the old train station (the second oldest preserved train hall in Germany), the main train station and the Bismarck tower at Rosenbühl. In the last few centuries, many formerly independent communities have been incorporated. Most of these have preserved town centers. These have grown into a coherent area through development since the early 20th century. That is why there are many other old town buildings in the urban area in addition to the inner city. Most of the incorporated places had grown organically before their incorporation, some also have Wilhelminian-style areas that were created during industrialization.

The theater, which was newly built at the end of the 20th century, and the Freiheitshalle opposite , which were completely renovated and rebuilt at the beginning of the 21st century, form a contrast .

The Hofer Rathaus was inaugurated on December 23, 1566. It is one of the oldest buildings in the city. In its history it was often destroyed by wars and fires, so that it was rebuilt in 1823 in the neo-Gothic style on the old foundation walls. When it was built, it served as a model for the Weimar town hall . In 2016 the 450th anniversary of the town hall was celebrated.

The hospital was founded in 1268 as an old people's and poor house at the lower gate outside the city walls. There was a ditch behind the building until the early 20th century, which turned the rear part of the Lower Suburb into an island. Later it was filled in. Hof International Film Festival

Central cinema

The Hof International Film Festival takes place every year in October on six days in two cinemas. "HOF" is the abbreviation for "Home Of Films", said Wim Wenders about the Hof Festival. In 1967, the student Heinz Badewitz organized a two-and-a-half-hour cinema evening with his own films in Hof with his bandmates (New Jazz Group) Werner Weinelt and Uwe Brandner . They called this the 1st Hof Short Film Festival . The idea came about after disappointing experiences at the “Oberhausen Short Film Festival” and because the conditions in their study city of Munich were difficult and the rents were too high. This was the hour of birth of the Hof International Film Festival . The festival continued to develop under the direction of Heinz Badewitz. In four decades it has developed into one of the most prestigious German film festivals, where the young directors show their debut films to the public for the first time. The major trends such as the New German Cinema directors such as Werner Herzog , Wim Wenders and Volker Schlöndorff or the comedy boom of the eighties (z. B. Men by Doris Dorrie ) were placed in the courtyard. The Hof Film Festival does not award any prizes. Various carriers, u. a. the city of Hof, but over the years have docked with the Film Festival to award prizes on the fringes of the festival, including the City of Hof Film Prize, the Eastman Sponsorship Prize, a prize for the best production design and a prize for visual film criticism. The German Film Prize was awarded for the first time in 2005 for outstanding achievements in film technology (e.g. sound, editing). A similar event is SEHquenz , a film week with a presentation of current German films.

Hofer Volksfest

The Hofer Volksfest is the largest festival in the region. It takes place every year at the end of July / beginning of August at the Volksfestplatz in Hof and lasts ten days. The Freedom Hall on the fairground serves as a festival hall during the festival. The folk festival begins on the Friday before the Hof summer fair. The summer fair itself begins on the Monday after Jakobi (July 25th). The festival ends on Sunday after a week. The Hof breweries alternately serve their beer in the festival hall and in the beer garden. There is an extensive amusement park on the Volksfestplatz with many rides, lottery booths and snack stands. On the opening day, the great parade of the Hof clubs and organizations takes place. Schlappentag

Schlappentag parade

The Schlappentag takes place one week after Whit Monday and is one of the traditional Hof festivals. After the city was destroyed by the Hussites, the Hofers turned to the Margrave of Brandenburg . He granted them ten years tax exemption on the condition that the people of Hof purchase weapons to defend themselves. A rifle guild was founded, the shooters also had to compete in competitions. Most of them only rushed to the shooting house on the last day, during which the target practice had to be completed, so that because of the rush they mostly wore wooden shoes (= slippers). In the run-up to Schlappentag, celebrations such as the Hussite tour and the Schlappenschießen are held. The Schlappenkönig is determined, who then represents all Hofer shooting clubs and the guilds. On Schlappentag there is a big parade followed by a party.

Economy and Infrastructure

Hof is the seat of authorities, institutions and companies. Around 250,000 people live in the city's catchment area.

Historical review

Hof was a classic industrial and trading town. Similar to other cities in the region, such as Plauen , the largest industry in Hof was the textile industry . Mainly because of the textile industry and the cotton processed there, Hof got the nickname "Bavarian Manchester ". Hof was a rather wealthy city due to the large businesses. In addition, the porcelain industry was represented in the city with Moschendorf porcelain as the most famous manufacturer. With 10 breweries in the past , Hof has been the most important brewery location in Upper Franconia after Kulmbach since the 15th century .

Key data of the economy

In 2016, Hof generated a gross domestic product (GDP) of 1.847 billion euros within the city limits . In the same year, GDP per capita was € 41,114 (Bavaria: € 44,215, Germany € 38,180) and thus above the national average. In 2016, there were around 34,000 gainfully employed people in the city. The city is one of the most important business locations in Northern Bavaria . The unemployment rate in December 2018 was 5.3% and thus well above the Bavarian average of 2.7% (in the Hof district it is 2.7%).

In the future atlas 2019 , the independent city of Hof (Saale) took 268th place out of 402 districts, municipal associations and independent cities in Germany and is therefore one of the regions with a “balanced risk-opportunity mix” for the future.

Retail centrality

According to a study by GfK (Gesellschaft für Konsumforschung) GeoMarketing on GfK retail centrality from 2015, the city of Hof ranks eighth among the ten top cities and districts that are attractive to the catchment area of a shopping city. The attraction lies in the fact that a shopping city can tie up more purchasing power than its residents have available on their own. The value 100 means that just as much purchasing power is implemented in a location as is available there. In the city of Hof, the value is 182.8. The city of Straubing had the highest value with 224.2 .

Industry and manufacturing

overview

The most important employer, measured in terms of the number of employees subject to social security contributions, is the retail sector, followed by the healthcare sector, the textile industry, the logistics division and the banking sector. There are also companies that manufacture cold stores, underwater pumps, sewage treatment equipment, electric drives, and steel and light metal components.

Textile industry

The most important branch of industry in Hof outside the service sector is the textile and clothing industry. With the neighboring districts of Hof, Kulmbach and Bayreuth, the economic area is one of the three most important textile locations in Germany. Important representatives are the Hoftex Group and the Neuhof spinning mill .

Brewing

Logo of the Scherdel brewery
  • Hof was a center of beer brewing. At the beginning of the 20th century there were twelve breweries in Hof:

Bavaria (Laubmann)
Bürgerbräu (Ried)
Deininger-Kronenbräu (AG)
Löwenbräu (AG)
Meinel-Bräu (Georg Meinel, Meinel-Bräu)
Karl Militzer

  Joh. Richter
  Scherdel beer (Bernhard Scherdel)
  (Heinrich) Schmidt's heirs (Schmidts Heiner)
Karl Schuster ( wheat beer )
  Gg. Weidner (Georg Weidner)
  Karl Zelt ( Schlappenbier )

Meinel-Bräu still exists independently today and the Scherdel brewery continues to work in Hof under the umbrella of the Kulmbacher brewery . All other breweries have stopped production. The Falter brewery came with the incorporation of Unterkotzau into the city of Hof. It stopped production in mid-2008. Despite being taken over by the Scherdel Brewery in 2010, the Zelt brewery ceased brewing. The brewery's main business was mainly the Schlappenbier, which was only produced by it. Since the closure, Schlappenbier has been brewed by the Scherdel brewery. The Bürgerbräu Hof brewery has also ceased to exist for a few years.

Services and retail

  • Since 2000, the establishment of call centers has created jobs in the low-wage service sector. Hof is also the center of many other services, the most notable representatives of which are Weiherer Reisen GmbH & Co., Vodafone , Müller , NKD and Wöhrl . In 2020 the Hof Galerie, a shopping center owned by the Luxembourg investor Mesa Development and the Activ Group from Upper Swabia will complement the shopping opportunities. The Hofer retail trade is one of the most popular in Germany . In a study, Hof ranks eighth among 132 German municipalities in terms of customer satisfaction.
  • The Marktkauf and Kaufland branches are smaller shopping centers, including hairdressers, flower shops, smaller restaurants and snack bars, and the Expert electronics store in Marktkauf.
  • The city of Hof has developed a website together with retailers, in which almost all Hofer shops are presented and can therefore be found on a joint website. Another advantage is that smaller shops also have a website.
  • The city also wants to establish retail in the digital media of the 21st century. By means of an influencer project, the city is trying to set modern impulses for the urban economy. A blogger introduces the city and its stories, sights, shops and other topics on her blog.
  • A consultation process took place between the Kaufhof department store chain and the Dormero hotel chain in 2017 to decide whether a department store and hotel business would be possible under one roof. Kaufhof announced in 2018 that this was not possible and broke off negotiations, but wanted to stick to the location in Hof's old town. Because the hotel management was pursuing its hotel plans, the Kaufhof management announced that it would close the location at the end of 2018. In 2019, a Dormero Hotel will be built in the four- story building . Three retail areas are to be created on the ground floor.
  • There are branches of McDonald’s , Burger King , Subway , KFC and Nordsee .
  • There are numerous car dealerships in the city, including branches of the Volkswagen , Audi , Seat , Škoda (Volkswagenzentrum Hof), BMW , Ford , Mercedes-Benz and Opel brands .
  • Hof is well known for numerous butchers and restaurants. One of the traditional restaurants is the Meinel's Bas brewery restaurant with beer garden, which is also the connection location of the school association RAAV Absolvia Hof. The beer garden with restaurant on Theresienstein with regular music performances is also well known .

The route from Reichenbach to Hof central station was electrified by the end of 2013. This measure is related to the opening of the city tunnel in Leipzig , which can only be used by electric trains and should be accessible to regional trains from Hof.

Transport network

In the city and district of Hof, the uniform tariff of the high-franc tariff applies to the buses of the transport companies involved (HofBus GmbH, RBO and others). At the Anspann / Klinikum stop, you can switch between the lines to the south-east and south-west parts of the city. Line 21 runs to the neighboring Saxon town of Plauen in Vogtland. This line was set up shortly after the opening of the border between the Federal Republic of Germany and the GDR in order to offer a quick alternative to the long train journey between the two cities and to express the bond between the twin cities Hof and Plauen. The line was discontinued when the Vogtland Transport Association changed the timetable.

In autumn 1818, swimming and ice skating came to Hof with Florian Clöter . He arranged for a swimming school to be set up at the upper stone bridge and brought ice skating to the Saale . In 2018 the renovation of the ice pond was completed and a modern ice rink opened there.

Flamin Clöter left Hof in 1821. With that, the gymnastics exercises stopped, even before the state ban on gymnastics for Bavaria was issued in 1824. For a few years the gymnastics business in Hof as in the whole kingdom was idle, until by decree of August 21, 1826 gymnastics was allowed again by the new King Ludwig I. at least the high school students. Physical education at Bavarian grammar schools was made a compulsory subject by a ministerial decision of November 2, 1868.

Girls' gymnastics started at the Höhere Töchterschule in Hof in 1860. The preparation of elementary school teachers for gymnastics lessons was tackled by the city's main gymnastics teacher Rudolf Lion from 1868 onwards. On February 11, 1870, the city school commission declared physical education to be a compulsory subject at the Hof elementary schools.

On April 8, 1861, permission was sought from the Hof city council to establish a gymnastics club. The letter was read "with pleasure" and support was promised to the association. While the city administration was happy to support the sporting activities, they reached the limit of accommodation when the association asked "to be allowed to march into the city every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday after gymnastics with a drum beat". The promised gymnasium was completed in 1868.

1869: After his election as the city's main gymnastics teacher, Rudolf Lion was responsible for the overall direction and coordination of all gymnastics lessons in Hof. A highlight in the club life was the organization of the 9th Bavarian Gymnastics Day on September 10th and 11th, 1871 in Hof. When there were disputes in the club in 1874, several members left and founded a second gymnastics club in Hof.

Further gymnastics clubs emerged in Hof towards the end of the 19th century, for example with the gymnastics club Hof, the Freie Turnerschaft or the failed gymnastics club Vater Jahn, founded in 1907, whose members no longer wanted to know about the existence of their club a year later.

Channel

Hof-Labyrinthberg transmitter

From 1948 to 1994 Hof was the location of a medium wave transmitter of the RIAS in order to better supply the southern parts of the GDR with the RIAS program. Two 100-meter-high, guyed steel truss masts, insulated from the ground, served as the transmitting antenna . These masts were demolished in October 1995 by blowing them up simultaneously. The RIAS broadcast its VHF program from the station in Großer Waldstein (internationally coordinated as Sender Hof) with 20 kW ERP each :

In the courtyard of the operating Bayerische Rundfunk the station yard at the Hohensaas. Until 1999, the transmission frequency 520  kHz was used. This frequency is not in the official medium wave band and so this only 200 watt EMRP transmitter, which was operated in single-frequency mode together with the transmitter in Würzburg , could be used well for propagation tests in the medium wave range. However, since many modern radios could no longer receive the frequency of the Hof transmitter, the frequency was changed to 729 kHz in 1999. In the course of this frequency changeover, a new transmission mast was also erected. For this purpose, the reflector mast of the Ismaning transmitter , which was no longer required, was dismantled and rebuilt in Hof. It is a 74-meter-high, grounded steel framework construction that is fed from above, like the transmission masts of the long-wave transmitters Aholming and Donebach . The Bayern 1 program was broadcast for many years, and B5 for some time in the 1990s . From October 8, 2007 the program Bavarian Open Radio was broadcast, which was renamed on May 5, 2008 in on3-radio . The Bayern plus program has been broadcast since January 10, 2011 . Since the beginning of 2015, the location has also been used to broadcast DAB . On September 30, 2015 at 12:45 p.m., the medium-wave transmitter was finally switched off; only DAB is broadcast.
