The Hof Zoological Garden is the only zoo in Upper Franconia. It is located at the city park Theresienstein the city of Hof , close to the botanical gardens, geological garden and natural history garden.
history
The Hofer Zoo was initially opened in 1954 as an aquarium exhibition by the Association for Aquarium-Terrarium and Folk Natural History Hof e. V. founded and later expanded as a small animal zoo. For the State Garden Show in 1994 , the site was fundamentally redesigned and the small animal zoo became the zoological garden.
After the death of Janusz Gutkowski, who had managed the zoo for 30 years, Eugen Fischer temporarily took over the management until Gutkowski's successor was trained. In 2018, already under the direction of Sandra Dollhäupl, a number of modernization measures were completed: For an investment of around 210,000 euros (one third of which was a grant from the city of Hof, the main amount was donations from foundations and donors), a new ticket booth and a bilingual one were built Signage (German and Czech). The walk-in parakeet aviary was rebuilt and the savannah house was energetically renovated. The zoo was financially burdened by the high electricity costs. The city of Hof increased the annual grant to the zoo from 110,000 to 130,000 euros.
In 2018, for the first time since visitor statistics began in 2001, more than 60,000 people visited the zoo.
In 2019 the zoological garden will celebrate its 65th anniversary. At half time, the number of visitors was 1,500. The festival ran parallel to the German-Finnish folk festival on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Hof-Joensuu city partnership.
Residents
At the zoo, there are owls and griffins in aviaries , a monkey house with Capuchin - and cotton-top tamarins , a lynx -Gehege and a walk- Bennett kangaroo -Gehege. The earth show house allows insights into the burrows of fox mongooses and prairie dogs . One focus is endangered European animal species such as little owl and white stork as well as rare domestic animal breeds, for example the Skudde and the domestic pigeon Franconian bagdette .
Another focus is South America. In the savannah house (formerly tropical house) a variety of fish, reptiles , amphibians and mammals is presented on 400 m² . It contains a rainforest biotope, a landscape aquarium with 7000 liters of water, several tropical outdoor terrariums and a large Amazon basin. Numerous tetra , catfish and cichlids live there .
Gibbons and several owl aviaries have been around since 2006 . A system for ring-tailed lemurs is planned for the future .
Geological garden, natural history garden
The geological garden gives an insight into the geological structure of the region. The Saale and its tributaries are shown in miniature form.
The natural history garden shows the diversity of the native flora in differently designed areas.
Trivia
In 2019, the ventriloquist Sebastian Reich and his ventriloquist doll, the hippo lady Amanda, took on the sponsorship of a donkey .
